    Flying Dog Yeast from Wyeast.

I went to their website and got this information: Alcohol content: 5.3% ABV Original Gravity: 1.052 IBU's: 36 Specialty Malts: 120L Crystal Hops: Northern Brewer, Cascades Process: Dry hopped with cascades during fermentation I sent an email asking if they used any other grains and...

    Flying Dog Yeast from Wyeast.

I have done two batches with it. I made a starter with the first and racked directly on the cake for the second. My impression so far is that both batches started off fast and continued to ferment actively for almost 2 weeks. I just kegged the first batch this weekend and the gravity ended at...

specialty malts and adjuncts - how to choose and use

It is more of whether or not you must mash. You can use black barley and black patent in an extract recipe by steeping them. In an AG batch you would include those grains in your mash.

    slow ferment

Duff yeast, is that a Wyeast VSS? Doh! Hmmmmm, beer.

    Cooler heat loss

This is the cooler I have. It is a 48qt Coleman, blue. My first mash I lost about 5 degrees over an hour. This was without using a blanket. My last mash I used a heavy blanket on top of the cooler and I only lost 2 degrees over an hour. I do not pre-heat the cooler, but I do bring it...

    Thinking of Skiping PM

I only did one PM before going AG and that was because I did not have a pot big enough for a full boil. If you have everything to go AG, go for it, it is so worth it.

Making a starter IN the fermentor

that would be a pretty big starter. The normal sized starter probably wouldn't work.

    did first mini-mash... I Got a question

Of course your efficiency would affect the answer, however I ran the numbers and you should be at about 1.056 with 5 lbs of DME and 2 lbs of 2-row. % Weight Weight (lbs) Grain Gravity Points Color 71.4 % 5.00 Light Dry Malt Extract 45.0 2.0 28.6 % 2.00 American Two-row Pale...

    Sanyo 4912 owners, a question!

Can you post some pictures of the 2 kegs AND CO2 bottle. I would like to see how you did it. Thanks.

    did first mini-mash... I Got a question

You gravity should have been in the 1.053 - 1.057 range. What most likely went wrong was you got poor efficiency (way under 50% by my calculations). This could be a result of the grain crush or your sparging method. I would bet on the grain crush. How did you mash and sparge? This is...

    How long in primary?

Due to time availability I will generally rack to the secondary one week after brewday. However, Pumbaa's formula is more often used: "Time to move it" / 'other things to get done" x "if I feel like moving it or not" = when I get around to it

    potato beer

Potato Beer?:drunk: This would be a partial mash but I do not think you will find a potato extract: Meister Potato Brau (for 5 gallons) 5 pounds 6-row domestic barley malt, crushed 2.5 pound grade A Idaho potatoes (washed and grated) 3 pounds M&F pale unhopped malt extract 1/3 oz...

Why can't I get it right?

Extract recipes are usual acurate with their estimated OG & FG. And dry yeast is usually fairly good at hitting it's apparent attenuation. I have brewed this kit before and the OG should not be higher than 1.068. I ran the recipe through TastyBrew's calculator and came up with this: OG 1.066...

Why can't I get it right?

Being that you mentioned it tasted good before you kegged it, how cold is your fridge? If your temp in the fridge is too cold you will lose a lot of the hop flavor leaving a sweeter (extract) flavor. I make sure that mine is around 50 degrees and it tastes much better. I did the Octane recipe...

How many of you quit experimenting after you found "it."

My process has changed as I progress with this hobby so I haven't found "IT" yet. It seems each brew tastes better than the last. I am partial to APAs and IPAs, but have been trying some other styles and want to brew them as well. I am thinking along the lines of finding my "house" ale to be...

    will this sanitize

I use Easy Clean to sanitize. 8 batches no problems yet.

    Hops Hops & Hops

I did a cascade pale ale also: 3 oz for 60 min 2 oz for 30 min 1 oz for 5 min 2 oz dry hop for two weeks in the secondary total of 121 IBU (if I remember correctly) This brew was sooooooooooo good. I called it my Bitter Bad Beat Pale Ale.

    Dry-hopping w pellets?

Yes, you need to sanitize the bag before you use it. I just soak with the rest of my gear. You can carb and serve with the hops in the keg. You can let them set in the keg until it is empty or until you have achieved the perfect aroma. How much you use is up to you. Less than 1 ounce...

    Dry-hopping w pellets?

I have considered dry hopping in the keg. I really thought about this method when I use the whole leaf, as you cannot bag them and put them in a carboy. The bags I use (fine nylon) do a good job holding in the hops.

    Dry-hopping w pellets?

With any dry hopping I do it in the secondary. I tried pellets directly in the carboy, but did not like the floating hop debris in every bottle. I have had good results using a mesh bag with pellets. The last few batches I have done I used whole leaf and just tossed them into the carboy. There...
