    Chocolate hazelnut porter

+1 for the tasting idea. At this point it's a good idea to pull a sample to not only get a current gravity reading, but to see how it tastes. If the tastes are balanced and where you want them, you've got basically two options: it might be a good idea to rack to a secondary for a week or two...

    Chocolate hazelnut porter

Chocolate. Hazelnut. Beer. If this ain't gettin' close to the perfect combination, I dunno what is. I think you're on the right track; 10 days on 8 oz. cocoa at flameout and then hazelnut extract at bottling is exactly what Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer do in their book "Brewing Classic...

    White house beer

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I hope to move to full boils at some point (sooner than later with luck). It's an ever-evolving learning process, and fantastic. Cheers! :mug:

    White house beer

    One way to calculate is to take the difference in gravities and multiply by 131.25. (OG-FG) x 131.25 = ABV 1.060-1.018 = 0.042 x 131.25 = 5.51% ABV Cheers

    White house beer

No, it was 1.15 oz. But now that you point it out, it seems obvious that that small of an amount wouldn't raise it to 70. D'oh! That's my noobiness talking. :D Possibility 1: I do partial boils (starting with 2.5 gal. for steeping grains), and then top up in the primary to get to 5...

    Beer Thief

+1 for the SS turkey baster. I got one last weekend and it works like a charm. Cheers :mug:

    White house beer

Finally bottled the Honey Ale today. Here's the story: Brew day: 10/21 Bottling day: 11/11 OG: 1.070 FG: 1.015 ABV: 7.2% OG was a little higher than others because I had an extra 1.15 oz. of DME laying around that I wanted to use up. Did three weeks in the primary, then straight to bottle...

    WLP400 Slow go

Since sharing is caring... :) I cooked up a Belgian Honey Wit on Oct. 14 and pitched a 1.6L starter of this WLP400. OG 1.050ish (maybe 1.052), fermented at 70 degrees. I came home the next night to an overflowed airlock (you're right about clogging, rhamilton) so I rigged up a blowoff tube...

    Hurricane Sandy

All in all we lucked out here in NOVA. Lost power 5pm Sunday, got it back 8:45 this morning. Other than that, no damage. The only slight inconvenience was my three primaries dropping from 70ish to 63 for those days, but really, that's nothing to complain about in the gran scheme of things. I...

    What can I make with...

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up brewing on Sunday during the beginnings of the hurricane, so I threw a bunch of this stuff together and named it "Sandy Wheat". Unfortunately SWMBO doesn't like hoppy tastes at all, so I ended up using .5 oz. each of East Kent Goldings and UK Fuggles...

    Hurricane Sandy

I say a brew comes out of this experience (or a recipe name, at least). We'll just have to see how bad it gets here in DC... With a little luck it won't be completely FUBAR. Stay safe, y'all.

    Pepper Basics

Jalapeño cream ale?!? Now that's what I'm talking about!! :) My interest is definitely peaked. This idea combines two good things: spice and beer. Are you brewing extract or AG?

    What can I make with...

Hello comrades- After 9 or 10 batches of various styles, I now have some random bags of grain sitting around, and would love to use them up. Anyone have some extract recipe suggestions using the following? 11 oz. Crystal 60L 11 oz. Melanoidin 14 oz. Torrified Wheat 8 oz. Biscuit 5 oz...

    Anyone try BRY-97 yet

I used this strain on an India Black Ale I made (Brewer's Best kit), and the results are delicious. It's actually my favorite beer I've made so far; I don't know how much that has to do with the Bry-97, but the results were damn good. Definitely doing this recipe again in the future. Cheers...

    Wlp028

True, COLO. I'll just RHAHB and see how it turns out. :) I checked the gravity today and it's at 1.024 (7.9% ABV so far). Hopefully it'll drop another few points in the coming days. (aiming for 1.021 or so). Besides, good things come to those who wait. Cheers :mug:

    Wlp028

I've got a Wee Heavy Scottish Ale with this 028 going in a primary right now. The brew was fine, the first day or two of fermentation were fine, but then a !@#%* idiot (who shall remain nameless so that my wrath doesn't boil over) ran a de-humidifier right next to it, which raised the area...

    White house beer

Thanks for the replies, folks. I'll look for those numbers when I go for it (maybe this weekend?). Now I just need to figure out how to sweet talk the guys over at 1600 Penn. out of some of that honey... Cheers! :mug: __________________________________________________________ Primaries: Wee...

    White house beer

Thanks Zuljin. I ask about the starter because I'm going to use White Labs 005 instead of Danstar Windsor.

    White house beer

Hey all- I imagine there's a good chance this question is answered somewhere in the preceding 28 pages, but I gave up after page 7. Can anyone confirm what the OG and FG are for this WH honey ale is? Northern Brewer pegs OG at 1.062. Are other people getting that number? I'm going by the WH...

    Wort volume vs. IBUs?

That's right, I am topping off to get to 5 gal. I boiled this up the other night. Here's the recipe I used: 9 lbs. Light LME 3 lbs. Light DME .8 lb. Red Wheat .4 lb. Crystal 60L .4 lb. Melanoidin .2 lb. Torrified Wheat 3 oz. Chinook pellets (AA 11.8%) 2 oz. Willamette pellets (AA...
