Good source of ZINC for RO brewing water?

If you can accurately measure small amounts of things, like with milligram scale and a pipette (already have these for brewing salts and acids.) I got reagent grade zinc sulfate heptahydrate on Amazon. What you then need to know is what percentage of that by weight is elemental zinc -- in...

StarSan solution okay to leave in plastic brew bucket for a while?

The only problem I've had with the caps is there's no stop, so you can keep threading them down until the bottle neck punches the top out, so they don't last long enough for chemical decomposition to come into play! (Tip, this is another great application for duck tape.) ;)

Good source of ZINC for RO brewing water?

You don't want to add zinc up front. Almost all the zinc present in both water and malt is bound and retained in the spent grains of the mash, and in trub after the boil. Supplementation is vital to good yeast health and fermentation performance, but it should be dosed in the fermentor at...

StarSan solution okay to leave in plastic brew bucket for a while?

One obvious thing to note is that full strength Star San concentrate comes packaged in HDPE bottles, intended to sit there indefinitely. So no worries with anything made of that.

Don't worry, be patient, it will get there. I honestly think you'll be better off in the end. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

    German Gravity Keg Faux Holzfass

Community effort at drinking is pretty much the definition of Oktoberfest. And for those of us who've been social distancing for most of our lives, there's that.

    Best News Headlines

Yeah, we hear about the cases where someone comes off a vent. What isn't noted is that most of the deaths reported daily are people who were on one. There is naturally some bias built in to what is reported. Man bites dog, etc. But we still need to hear good news once in a while, or we'll...

    Homemade Bread Thread

Yeah, my point is it doesn't really matter that much, bugs wanna grow, but a loose, batter like consistency is easier to work with, and with more water and, as a result, easier bubbling of CO2 out and O2 diffusing in, the culture will grow faster. So I'd suggest anything from 100% to 150%...

    Homemade Bread Thread

I've done it that way, starting with whole grain flour. The argument in favor is that the larger portion of the outer layer of the grain (bran) carries a larger inoculating population of yeast and bacteria, which is true, and the extra enzymes, minerals, and other nutrients in the germ and bran...

Fresh from the oven... Realized I hadn't made sourdough loaf in a while. 100% KAF AP, stiff levain, fairly wet but don't ask me the final hydration, I mix by hand.

What came in the mail for you today?

Ordered 10 lbs. Invoice, packing list, receipt... all say 10 lbs. Not complaining, just saying.

Step mashing results in significantly higher Wort pH than does single infusion

Something fishy. IME pH locks in very rapidly and holds steady through the mash and into the kettle, so I doubt it would make any difference if I were to, for some reason I can't fathom, hold the single, initial temperature rather than proceed with my normal 5 step program. Haven't read the...

What I did for beer today

Spunded a batch. Closed loop gravity transfer to fermentation purged keg, instead of liquid purge and pressure transfer. Been meaning to make these changes anyway, but now seems an especially good time to stop wasting bottled CO2!

    RIP John Prine

[MERGED THREADS -Mod] No more illegal smiles. Guess he was lucky to survive himself long enough for Corona to take him, but surely was a great talent.

    What are you drinking now?

Had coffee this morning. Have not been hitting the go juice with nowhere to go, but I miss it. I like coffee. Hey now, world, yahtzee! Here I am! I'm awake! Now what the #@&% am I supposed to do?
