    Make IPA Clear Again

But it's just like the hazies, you keep thinking surely it's had its day and is going to die away, but no....

What came in the mail for you today?

Ooh, nice! That pasta attachment is sweet -- but spendy enough that it inspired me to seriously develop my hand rolling and cutting skills, which I'm glad to have done. But some day...

Yeast Oxygen Scavenging with Wine or Brewer's Yeast

It may be there, or in another blog post; it has been discussed at length on the LOB forum and elsewhere. Bryan's purpose in these experiments was to create a scenario where YOS was the only active protection, to really test its effectiveness, and it has proven to be very robust. So rest...

What did not come in the mail today?

I've recently placed orders with MoreBeer, Northern Brewer, Brew Hardware, and Great Fermentations. While NB and MB said they were having some delays, these were very minor, everything moved just a few days slower than usual. GF hasn't sent a shipping notice yet about a week after ordering...

Yeast Oxygen Scavenging with Wine or Brewer's Yeast

If you read carefully, he set it up for testing purposes unsealed to simulate a completely open vessel, no floating cap or even lid, and it still held 0 DO for 4 days at room temperature. So those of us who cap our vessel after dosing sugar and yeast, are really well protected.

Yeast Oxygen Scavenging with Wine or Brewer's Yeast

Fascinating question, especially at this time. I'm unaware of anyone having tested this, whereas we have rigorous testing of YOS with bread yeast, but I have seen others raising this question. I dose my yeast and dextrose for YOS the night before brewday, and since we know that the DO will...

Aging pH meter false reading 'high or low' survey

IME Hanna pHep5 meters also increasingly drift low, especially at the low end, and are slower to calibrate (such that they can be said to calibrate, given the drift.) That said, mine (I've had two) had this problem to a lesser degree when new, they just got worse over time, and replacing the...

    Flow Control Faucets

Yes they will, but I have a better suggestion: the flow control ball lock liquid disconnect by Kegland, sold by William's Brewing. Flow control faucets can exacerbate foaming, by introducing turbulence right at the end of the line, where there suddenly is no more restriction. Putting the...

    RO water prediction

Get a TDS meter, about $10-15 on Amazon, and test your output. My feed water is well over 250 ppm, but my RO unit reduces it to under 5, so nothing remaining is significant. For purposes of calculations, I just treat it like distilled. By testing output TDS regularly, you'll also see when...

What makes this an intertap only shank???

It's in bold print right on MoreBeer's listing of the tower shank, but not the straight Intertap shank. That's why I figure there's a significant difference between the straight and tower shanks.

What I did for beer today

@seatazzz, it always warms my heart to hear of one more glass carboy being taken out of service!

What makes this an intertap only shank???

I have a Perlick on a regular Intertap SS straight shank -- not one of the tower shanks. Works fine, so I checked and I see MoreBeer does not give any warning saying that the straight shank is incompatible with any other faucets. It looks like the incompatibility may be unique to the tower shank.

    G L A D - I - B O T T L E !!!

I'm now purging my kegs with fermentation gas, doing a closed gravity transfer, and I always spund to carbonate anyway. So now the only thing I need bottled gas for is dispensing, and pulling gravity samples from the fermentor. With somewhere approaching 15 lbs on hand, I'm good for a long...

    Mystery ingredient in Duvel?

Duvel contains nothing but (besides water, hops, and yeast) Pilsner malt and a crap ton of dextrose. No secret ingredients, it is beautifully simple. The secret to that head is in process. Mashing and boiling that establishes the substrate, fermentation that does not compromise it, and...

Good source of ZINC for RO brewing water?

Martin, I think history actually testifies to the idea of zinc supplementation being needed. First, water was not always the only source, as copper and brass brewhouse equipment contributed some small amount. [But this is still a moot point, because (as @Paulaner notes) textbooks such as...

Good source of ZINC for RO brewing water?

My solution is 1%, so 1 g in 100 mL. As I mentioned, zinc sulfate heptahydrate is 22.7% zinc by weight. 6 gallons is 22.8 L. So say you want to add 150 ppb Zn. The calculation then is: 22.8 × 0.00015 ÷ 0.227 × 100 = 1.5066 mL. (Call it 1.5 mL.) That's liters, times desired dosage rate...

StarSan solution okay to leave in plastic brew bucket for a while?

The cloudiness when you mix Star San in mineralized water is caused by the phosphoric acid reacting with minerals and precipitating phosphate salts. I suspect that the slickness in an HDPE bucket may be the result of this precipitate adhering to the surfaces. I wonder if this also contributes...
