What I did for beer today

10.5 hour session, starting with a trip to the home-brew shop that just opened near me today. I was their first ever customer, picked up 10lbs Maris Otter, 3oz Cascade, a sachet of Nottingham dry yeast and commenced brewing. Got 87% efficiency (for the moment they're crushing manually with a...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Happy 50th bday GrogNerd! I also am brewing a Maris Otter SMaSH, but with Cascade. 10lbs MO, 1 ounce Cascade each at 60,30,5. 20 minutes into the mash at 153*. Smells great! :rockin:

    Billy Beer

I lived in Washington state for over 5 years and I almost had to check myself in to anger management counseling, my road rage was getting so bad! Slowest drivers I've ever had the misfortune of being around! I feel your pain :drunk:

    Gave beer novices yeast farts

The very first person I ever handed a bottle of my homebrew to immediately turned it upside down, and then held it up to the light to admire all the yeast that was now swirling around inside. I could only shake my head. My latest batch of wheat has been a big hit, with a lot of Kolsch yeast in...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

There's a brand new homebrew shop opening up for the first time tomorrow morning. I plan on being there when the doors open at 9AM. I talked to the owner the other day and took a look around and have dibs on 10lbs of Maris Otter and some Cascade to brew a SMaSH. Here's hoping they have their...

    Homebrew competition - bottle question

Well, that is good info. I will try to get my hands on the rules, although they'll probably be in Spanish. I live in Puerto Rico, and have no idea if they'll be following the official BJCP guidelines. Thanks Revvy.

    Tats!

I just have one. It's to honor my dad, who was a private pilot. He died in a crash in the experimental aircraft he built in our garage and flew for over 20 years. We think he had a stroke or other sudden medical problem in flight.

    Grain stalks in my grain!

I've found a few grain stalks in my mash before. RDWHAHB.

    Homebrew competition - bottle question

If I enter beer in a competition (which I plan on doing soon for the first time, heck the fee is five bucks and three bottles of beer) and they take marks off because I send in Sam Adams bottles with my own labels on them I will be seriously upset. You're being judged on the beer you brew, not...

    Simcoe/Citra IPA recipe critique

I will be sure to update this thread when I sample a bottle or two in 8-10 days. I cracked the lid to add my dry hops and take a hydro sample (1.011ish), which I chilled in the fridge before tasting. There was still a lot of yeast in suspension, but this will definitely have some interesting...

Here's a cheap but attractive way to mount drip tray to keezer.

I like this!! Those brackets look really great, like they were made just for this job, and the price is great.

    Autolysis confusion

From what I've been reading autolysis is a potential factor for big breweries. Imagine you have a few hundred gallons of beer sitting on top of yeast that's fallen out of suspension and is being squeezed down into the conical portion of a fermenter, crushed by the massive weight of all the beer...

New cans from Slyfox Brewery - 360 Lid

Looks pretty smooth to drink out of IMO. I'm sure that was a primary design concern.

Want vs. Need for all grain

If you want to fly sparge, a tall round 10 gal cooler with a false bottom is a good choice. If you batch sparge I would just get a massive rectangular cooler. Either way you will need a second pot to either heat sparge water or store it after heating in the boil kettle. I got a good deal on two...

New post a picture of your pint

My "Weedwhacker Wheat", a very slight tweaking of the popular American Wheat recipe brewed with WLP 2565 yeast that can be found in the recipe database here on HBT. So crisp and delicious.
