    capping issues..another lesson

I've read bad things about the black capper. I wish I knew how many people have complained about broken bottles before I bought one; I have one but I've only capped 30 bottles with it. It went smoothly but the potential for failure was heavy on my mind.

    better bottles

It takes about 2 cups of water, a rag, and 30 seconds of swirling instead of 6 gallons and waiting overnight. Different strokes :tank:

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

Great advice :) Thanks! The creator of this recipe says it only spent 9 days in primary and won an award at only 3 weeks old. I don't intend to move it through my new little pipeline anywhere near that fast, but I am looking forward to having a refreshing wheat beer when it gets hotter soon.

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

Just an update. The bucket has been in the chest freezer around 60* all day. This afternoon the fermentation really picked up and it's now going gangbusters. The blowoff hose is bubbling about 45-50 times per minute with an occasional really big burp. I'm very pleased! In the meantime I...

Bending copper tubing/immersion chiller a little bir

For future reference - you can fill it with water and freeze it then bend while it's still frozen. No kinks!

    It's in the Bottle!

Just chalk it up as pouring one out for the homies. :)

    Bottled my first brew

Nothing wrong with sacrificing one or two. I just did this with my first batch - put one in the fridge overnight after they'd been in bottles for about 12 days and tried it. The rest are going to condition for another week at least but it sure was good to know that my beer was going to be...

What is the best way to remove labels from beer bottles?

One scoop of Oxyclean in a sinkful of HOT water. As hot as you can get it from the tap. Within an hour the labels should slide right off, or already be floating. I scrub the remaining glue residue off with a green pad, rinse them, and store in 6-packs. The HOT HOT HOT water is key. If the...

so what's the worst part of brewing for you

No having a local homebrew shop. I live in Puerto Rico and there is only one shop, a 3 hour drive away. Fortunately they have a delivery guy that will deliver stuff to my area once a week. 80*F ground water sucks for cooling wort. My least favorite thing, however, is waiting to be sure that...

    how to mash wheat?

I just brewed this recipe on Friday. I received the order of grains mixed and crushed by the Lhbs and the 0.5lb of rice hulls in a separate bag. I dumped in about 1/5 of the grain, then all the hills, then a bit more grain. Stirred thoroughly and then poured the rest of the grain and stirred...

American Wheat Beer American Wheat Beer - 2nd place Best of show - 2011 HBT BJCP competition

Cracked the lid this morning and confirmed that it is off and running with a thick healthy looking krausen. My bucket lid just leaks really badly. I really can't wait to taste this beer!

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

Well I left it out at 72 overnight and there was still zero activity in the blowoff, so I sprayed starsan around the lid and my hands and carefully pried up the edge. I was surprised to see a nice thick healthy looking krausen almost up to the lid and it smelled great! I guess this bucket just...

BEWARE! Clamp your wort chiller tubes

I actually have been blasted in the face with boiling hot water from the wort chiller outlet. It sucks! Hose clamps are cheap. Just make sure that once you have your chiller assembled and clamped, that your outlet is secure (I loosely grip it in some vice grips before turning on the hose) so...

Why does Malt Liquor taste so bad?

This is pretty good. At Bottleworks in Seattle (best beer store I've ever visited) they have one slot in one of the coolers where they sell pre-brown-bagged malt liquor - actually, I think it may be just big cans of PBR some of the time - but one of the employees doodles a unique bit of art...

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

I put the yeast starter in the fridge for a while... Should have kept better notes, I obviously didn't have the time to cold crash it completely as I only made the starter the day before. But this is good information on pitching colder yeast into warmer wort! Measured OG was approximately...

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

Thank you for the reply. I know this yeast likes to be a little colder and the recipe recommends to ferment at 62*. I set the chamber for the mid-high 50s under the assumption that the fermentation would kick off and the wort would be around 62. I just pulled the bucket out of the chamber and...

First time making a starter... I think I fouled it up noobie style.

Sorry about this novel-length post, I like to type and like to get all the details in. So here's the scoop, I made a 1.5L starter for some WLP 2565 Kolsch yeast for a wheat beer recipe I found here on HBT. I got my ingredients in from the LHBS, yeast was kept refrigerated. I smacked the smack...
