How many fermenters/show us your fermentation space thread

I have 3 three gallon BB and one 6 gallon class carboy. Most of my batches are the smaller size. I can squeeze two of these better bottles in my small fermentation fridge. I also have a chest freezer that I use for lagering and storing my bottled beer. I usually have two batches of ale and one...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I bottled an AG batch of Denny's Rye IPA yesterday. Today I and brewed Jamil's Hop Bursting recipe (American Amber), also AG. I previously have brewed the Northern Brewer extract kit based on this recipe called Evil Twin. I'm real curious to see how this compares.

    RO water pH

I'm trying to learn about water adjustments and have been following the great discussions on the topic here. I only have pH strips for testing at the moment, one strip goes from 4.6 to 6.2, another that goes from 4 to 8. I'm using the new 2.0 version of the EZ Water calc spreadsheet to estimate...

    EZ Water Calculator 2.0

What's the current thinking on the chloride/sulfate ratio that we've been led to believe is so important? It's been deemphasized in this spreadsheet and I've heard others suggest that it does more harm than good trying to adjust for malty vs bitter profiles. But no one seems to be willing to...

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

It's an aquarium temperature controller, so I'd guess it's water proof. I just tape mine to the side of my carboys with a bit of bubble wrap for insulation. Seems to work very well for me.

    Star San Mixture Shelf Life

I'm not sure about that. the way to be sure is to test the pH. It should be no higher than 3 if I remember correctly. Just sticking to RO water is easier than worrying about it IMHO.

ebay Temeperature Controller - any good?

    Correct, no soldering needed.

    Star San Mixture Shelf Life

+10 on the RO or distilled water. Hard water will spoil it fast. I used well water and it only went about a week before cloudy, and it probably wasn't fit to use for several days before it became obvious.

ebay Temeperature Controller - any good?

I thought it was pretty easy, but only you can decide that. Go read the thread and see if it's something you can handle... I built mine for around $50 total, and that was with buying a new heavy duty extension cord and new outlet. If you have those already you can save some cash. Keep in mind...

ebay Temeperature Controller - any good?

There's a DIY thread on these here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/ebay-aquarium-temp-controller-build-163849/ I built 2 of these and have been very happy with the results. They only do Celcius, however, so you need to make a conversion chart if you need F.

High Fructose Corn Syrup proposed to be renamed "corn sugar"

So true. Even the rice in most restaurants is sweetened here in the US. Sweet tea is gross though in my opinion. It just tastes wrong to me.

    How to brew is gone?

I wouldn't be surprised if he planed on "retiring" the online version intentionally. It was pretty out of date, and he has said publicly on many occasions that there are certain things in there he now regrets writing, as they just perpetuate some old-school thinking that he no longer believes...

North Country Malt Group to stop selling to homebrewers

Not to belabor the point made well by others, but unless you run a retail brick and mortar business, you really have no understanding of how difficult or expensive it is. The smaller you are the tougher it is, but being bigger requires a LOT more capitol so is out of reach for most. Did you ever...

BIAB...Why do I need to do more?

I'm basically doing the same thing, using a bag in a cooler for my mash. I see it as a convenience factor, and a stepping stone that can be easily upgraded later. I think starting as simple as possible allows you to make better spending decisions as you gain experience and really consider where...

Lager Pitching Temp: Can we settle this lager debate?

You really need to do some reading up on making starters first if you are going to brew lagers and use liquid yeast, assuming you are doing batch sizes of 5 gallons or more. I'd recommend getting a copy of John Palmer's book How to Brew. He covers making starters in detail. He has an online...

Lager Pitching Temp: Can we settle this lager debate?

It's not so much that you are reviving an ancient thread, but more that you did it by neither asking a relevant question nor adding any on-topic advice....not that I'm helping the situation with this post. To make this at least semi-relevant: I always try to pitch at or slightly under my...

How much O2 into the wort before pitch?

I'll go back and listen to it again, but I seem to recall them leaving it pretty vague. Their summary was to "experiment to find what works best for you". That doesn't give me much of a starting point, and I don't repeat the same recipes enough to get any kind of reliable comparison. That...

How much O2 into the wort before pitch?

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but I didn't start this thread to debate aeration vs oxygenation, or even different aeration methods. If you don't understand the the difference between aeration and oxygenation, then let me clarify for you. Aeration = using air to increase the level of...

    Thinking (again) about BIAB

Just try to stay away from using the bag for both uses! :cross:
