How do you take hydrometer readings while it's in the carboy?

    1. Use a beer/wine theif sanitize. their package says to and this is the short version. "sanitize drop the hydrometer in it take a reading dump beer back in pushing the little toggle on the bottom". I still have mine in the package and have not used it at all. I'm just a bit patient though and...

    To much head

Don't know if it's the "correct answer" but it worked for me. For the first time I kegged, did everything text book, carbed 24 hours at 30 shook then at 20 for another 24 hours. purged it set it to 10 psi and I had 90% head 10% beer for 3 days I delt with it finally I just turned the PSI down to...

    Adding Wort to Secondary?

Get a 5 gal carboy for your secondary. no need for it to be that big it will give you alot less to worry about.

Natural Carbing and shaking to check for leaks....

Charge it with your CO2 and if you have a ball style with the relief valve you can charge it and relieve it at the same time to get the O2 out of there.

    Beer as mash water

I asked this question awhile back but differently. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f14/so-you-ruin-your-batch-beer-what-do-you-do-311892/ Some said that the hop flavor could effect it mostly. I say go for it try it out and let us know.

I was scolded at LHBS today when I told em I don't usually use a secondary

Wholly crap that is genius, simple easy, and you almost can't go wrong. heck I bet someone probably could probably make it work with a carboy as well. Imagine how much easier those would be to clean if someone made a disposable liner for carboys ferment, rack, and throw away the liner.

I was scolded at LHBS today when I told em I don't usually use a secondary

Strange my LHBS told me to use my bucket for my primary and for the secondary use a 5 gal glass carboy and not a 6 gal. I said well i was "thinking of using two glass carboys" and not a bucket he said don't waste your time or money. the glass is a PITA to clean unless you really want to use...

    Anyone not use Star San?

Just curious, when I brewed years ago this stuff wasn't around or available and everyone did just fine. now that I'm back into brewing it seems everyone is a Star sans NAZI. So I'm just curious, is there anyone out there who goes against the grain and refuses to use it and go with other...

well I just kegged mine tonight, I took a sample to the neighbor and he seemed to really like it. I told him it was completely flat and not carbonated and he said WOW I couldn't even tell. Final Gravity was 1.006. Not bad I don't think I compared the color to my bottles I brought back...
