    Dry hopping combo

Dill and citrus is what I think of when you say Citra and Sorachi. Cascade andOr centennial would play nice in the same beer with citra and mosaic. Just did a pale ale with citra mosaic and eldorado. It was tasty

    14lbs Pilsner Mash @ 1.020 after 90min

By my understanding Carapils has no enzymatic content but it has an estimated 70% extract efficiency. The sugars have been converted during the malting process. So it will contribute sugars to the wort. It will offer less sugars than a pilsner malt but only the difference between expected...

    Alkaline Brewery Wash

We had the craft meister rep speak at a club meeting a few months ago. The biggest difference is water temps. PBW works best at 130-150. Alkaline brewery wash works effectively at room temps.

    exhaust fan

I use the s-600 from vortex. It’s enough if your hood is designed right and you have a way to get some make up air in the room. An 8’ duct moves 2x the volume of a 6’ duct. So if you can go 8’ I highly suggest you do. The last thing to consider is your exhaust run. Length of the run and...

Help understanding pellets vs leaf hops use.

Whole leaf hops will float, absorb water and swell. They can be tricky for a dry hop especially for a big dry hopped IPA in a carboy since they are larger. Pellet hops will dissolve into fine particles and sink faster. If you have a bucket or large opening in your fermentor you can bag whole...

    RO water filter?

You’ll want a TDS meter, it measures the total dissolved solids saturated in the water. You can get a stand-alone unit or an in-line unit. So my water is roughly 170 ppm total solids in suspension. After it passes through the filter I usually see a reading around 1-3 ppm. If you get a unit...

    14lbs Pilsner Mash @ 1.020 after 90min

Its possible the sugars were stuck in the grains. Since it was a fine grind you could have had a compacted grain bed, channeling etc.,.. do you recall stirring it a few times or did you leave the bed alone? Another possible scenario, is your hydrometer cracked? I had one with a hairline crack...

90 min boil not needed for pilsner malt?

Edit. Sorry I don’t read through the rest of the text. Can you elaborate a bit more on the damages connected to “over boil”? I’m cool with waiting if it will covered in an upcoming issue of Zymurgy. Cheers!

    SABCO Chill Wizard

You have a wort flow direction labeled wort in. Every time I use it I attach a hose to the “wort out” side and turn it on full blast before I do anything else. After a few min I turn off the water and connect to the wort in side and run it full blast. When you connect water to the “wort...

Super easy just bake it. 320 for two hours or 340 for one hour. I usually put it in a 340 degree oven let it bake an hour then turn off the oven and let it cool overnight. Then flush it both ways. I usually run a bit of sanitizer on brew day as a redundant measure.

No need to worry about the water side, wort only touches the wort side of the unit. Run some hot water through it and see if you get anything funky. I’d start by hooking your flow into the wort out side first. The first few times I used it I was amazed by the amount of crap the back...

    Secondary, No Secondary

Your not missing anything. You have captured the redundancy very well. I don’t use a secondary fermentor unless it’s a barrel for bourbon, fruit or wild yeast.

    Adding cane sugar to secondary

If your trying to add bitterness post fermentation you can try a hop tea or look to buy iso alpha hop extract. It’s expensive but it will work well

Using artificial flavorings for an adjunct stout.

Look for distilled extract rather than artificial flavorings.

I use cam lock fittings so it’s easy to connect and disconnect. I use the same hoses for cleaning as I use to rack the beer to the fermentor. That way everything on the cold side has the same cleaning process.

Yes I’m familiar with the unit and yes it’s a pain to break it down. You don’t need to bake it that’s your call. Flushing with hot water and running star San through it is a guarantee to infection. It’s simply not enough and bad practice. At the minimum you need to run a back flush with hot...

    First Home Brew!!

My recommendation is to move up the wedding day. She’s a keeper! All joking aside my best advise for you is to control fermentation temperature. An old freezer and a cheap inkbird temp controller is a great start. You can go in all sorts of directions with regards to equipment. What I’ve...

Survey: Lets hear why you prefer Propane over Electric Brewing

After years of brewing on propane in a semi heated garage in the north we moved. I was really sad to give up my garage set up. I really loved those few nice summer days with the garage door up the windows and the back door open. Neighbors could stop by and have a beer and it was a social thing...

    Weldless bulkhead keeps leaking

Find a stainless washer that is slightly larger than the gasket. The washer will prevent the gasket from expanding to much and it will keep it in place allowing a tighter seal, the gasket is on the outside of the kettle. Use a high heat gasket if it’s your boil kettle.
