    Cheap assed 3 tier system....

Nope.. you are certain to fill your brew with lots of carcinogenic plasticy yuminess by putting it through anything that is not food grade. Hell, even food grade plastic will emit dioxins when heated to sparge temperature. All of this means you are taking a wonderful and healthy (in moderation)...

I love Rogue brewing... I became a member of the Rogue Nation and received my citizenship card in the mail with some other swag. LONG LIVE THE ROGUES!

Opinions on hop bags vs no hop bags?

I have done both and noticed little difference. The simplicity of a hop strainer is very nice though. I took a SS mesh strainer for cooking, cut a small hole in the bottom of it, turned it upside down and put the dip tube through it in my keggle. Easiest conversion I've ever done...

    Opinions on my crush.

I have a false bottom in my keggle and it has been extremely tolerant in the past. I've never had a stuck sparge and I've done stupid things accidentally like let the water level drop below the grain bed and opened the the spigot all the way up so I'm really not that afraid of going fine on my...

    Opinions on my crush.

Hahahahah... this is my converted pasta machine aka The Grain Noodler! A few months back I was the OP of a thread where I posed the question whether or not a pasta roller machine like this one could be used as a roller mill if the rollers were scored: Turns out, in my whimsical...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Here's a link to my latest crush with the Grain Noodler (as I've taken to calling it). For everyone's info, I have the Arco Pasta Mill: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/opinions-my-crush-98433/

    Opinions on my crush.

Take a look at this crush and let me know if you think it is too fine or not. Looks to me like the husks are torn in half a lot so maybe I should back it off a notch. At the same time, there seems to be a nice range of small to medium pieces of grain.

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

HOLY CRAP! I'm the OP of this thread and just checked back in to see if this thing got any hits after the initial 10 or so. It appears that I have created a monster!!! I tried this out and it seemed to work alright but never took it through to total completion. I motorized mine but...

    Heating the mash before sparging.

I could certainly use a little insulation on the mash tun, but even if it maintained the mash temp if would still only be at 154 F which is considerably below where I had it at sparging. I'm thinking of picking up one of those water heater jackets and throwing it around it come mash time and...

    Heating the mash before sparging.

Heating the mash before sparging and really making sure it was up near 170F before lautering really made a difference in my efficiency today. I have been plagued with low efficiency (68%) in the past and have attributed it to the crush etc. I have a direct fire MLT so this time through I hit...

    The Dogs ate my Malt

Ahhh.. I know you mentioned that you don't have a scale but, buy a scale! You need one to measure the hops like you said. This one is a no brainer. Oh, and beat the paste out of that stupid dog.

HELP! First batch tastes like water?!!!

I would second what Yooper stated and add the following condition to not checking the mash temp: If the temp dropped really low you may have rendered a very fermentable and thin bodied wort regardless of how much grain you used. Having not checked the mash temp you eliminated one of the most...

    IPA recipe needed

Think about getting yourself Ray Daniels', Designing Great Beers. Anytime I hear someone say they don't know about formulating recipes I think back on when I got this book and it changed my brewing forever. This book will tell you everything you need to know about malt, hop and yeast...

High first runnings gravity, low overall efficiency?

I cool my wort to room temp before taking gravity readings and if I've over or under cooled by a few degrees I adjust accordingly and I treat water according to what it needs based on my local water analysis.

High first runnings gravity, low overall efficiency?

Is a high first runnings gravity but a low overall efficiency the sign of a poor crush? I have failed to achieve anything over 65% with my false bottomed keg MLT. I do conversion checks with Iodine, hit and hold my mash temps, stir my mash on a regular basis, calibrate my thermometers and...

    Efficiency 57%?? suggestions?

Well my friend, as far as I've read I would suggest not batch sparging and instead refining your present technique and finding out where the inefficiency lies as it may manifest itself in batch sparging as well. You've only provided a short list of your procedure but I'll make a few...

Wet (as in fresh) hops to dry conversion?

A quick heads up: Freezing undried hops can result in sludgy ruined hops when they are defrosted as it is sort of like freezing lettuce. Has anyone successfully defrosted undried hops? If yes, please give this guy some advice on how to save his precious harvest. I would probably throw...

    My latest label w/flyfishing theme

Me too... any flyfisher will instantly recognize it. Twizzit's just more a daiquiri drinker than he is a feather chucker. I guess not everyone is perfect. :) HOWEVER When someone who has no idea of the context can't interpret something it often means it needs adjustment to make it clear...

Hop T: My new keggle strainer.

I have a similar setup now FSR402 and that's why I'm devising this new system which attaches to my spigot. I would much rather have the hops freely float around in the wort than have them held back in a bag which I have to keep replacing and which doesn't hold back any of the cold break either...
