"I can taste the priming sugar"...huh?

Alright, I think I can add something to this conversation and it may... MAY help you understand what this dingbat is saying about your beer. I had a buddy who always said of both of our homebrews that it still had that, "homebrew note" and I had to agree at the time. There was just something...

FACEPALM - Wild yeast on wet hops

I always follow an old brew buddy's saying in times like these: "Short of taking a dump in the wort, nothing can make this undrinkable." Thus far it has worked out.

First year Cascades, when will they smell like hops?!

I find that there's a one to two week window in which the harvest is optimal. The cones will brown at the tips and the lupulin turns golden NOT yellow. By the sounds of it, your cones are probably still looking light green and are relatively tight (the leaves haven't splayed out). It's still a...

    2009 Hop garden picture thread.

This is the view from my balcony down to where the hops were planted 20 feet below: Some of the Nugget cones developing nicely: And some of the larger Willamettes:

A jolt of coffee to make the garden grow.

We have our own espresso maching at home and output a quarter cup of grounds a day. Our compost must be around 1/8 coffee grounds. When I dig out some processed compost and pop it on my hops they go nuts. I've grown all my hops using only my own organic compost and they are healthy and happy and...

New brew schedule... or how to brew with toddlers! (input/advice sought!)

I have a 19 month old high energy toddler and have it pretty much figured out. Setup and prep ahead of time. Prep refers to not only brewing but also to tending the the child. This means, food, a change of clothes close at hand, entertainment and a safe place to play. All of the brewing...

    Unidentified black bugs on hops

Well, I have definitely seen some spider mites on there and these mystery bugs are about twice the size. I'm going to spray my foliage down and treat it naturally and hopefully the mites and "others" won't do any long term damage.

    Unidentified black bugs on hops

I have some unidentified black bugs on my hops. They are six legged with a long abdomen. I'm not sure if they are hurting the hops and they seem to be up high on the leaves rather than at the bottom of the bine like Spider mites. They certainly don't look like any aphid or mite that I've been...

God I hate being a noob

That is one of the better things I've read on here in the last year. Well done.

If you wouldn't mind taking a look....

Here's your problem if this is indeed accurately worded: emptied mashtun of wort into boiling vessle (which was put to flame) and then used sprinkler style sparge arm to rinse grains collecting run off continuously and adding to boiling vessle as it heated up. That's some sort of batch/fly...

The Reliability Of People Wanting To Learn How To Brew

HAHAHAHAHAHHA.. way to throw down Llama. I gotta agree with you both. We are different. Something else is driving us to brew because it probably isn't worth it when you look at it financially and probably isn't worth the investment of time either but that doesn't change the fact that we...

The Reliability Of People Wanting To Learn How To Brew

I've actually gone out of my way to tell people if they want to come over to expect to work and get dirty and to wear something warm because we might be standing around outdoors a lot. I've gone to lengths to clearly explain that it is a lot of work. Nonetheless, they still say they have to...

The Reliability Of People Wanting To Learn How To Brew

When I started at a new company last year I taught a course on how to brew all-grain as there was a huge interest. I had around 11 people show up for the two night course which took place on successive Thursday evenings. I went through recipe formulation and the process and coupled it with a...

The Reliability Of People Wanting To Learn How To Brew

The more people I meet who find out I brew and are interested in coming over to partake and learn from a brew session the more I realize that most people are only interested in the idea of brewing. It seems that every time someone finds out about me brewing they become super keen to get in on...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

Nice work Brown Dog... I can't wait to see what sort of efficiency I get on a full batch grind. How tight did you close your rollers down to get that crush?

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

And here's the finished product: The crush selector: The opposite side has the crank exposed: And I put an angled bottom in so that the grain falls into the rollers: What can't be seen is an additional box built underneath the rollers which guides the crushed grain...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

I started building a simple box style hopper for my mill today. Looks like it will hold around 15 pounds of grain in a single go. I had a bunch of 1/2" plywood around that I had used to build some shelves. Went out yesterday and bought a new B&D laser sight circular saw because despite having...

Using a pasta maker to mill grain.

I highly, highly doubt that the linguini attachment would do anything except bounce grain around on top of it. If it did happen to drag a grain through it would then have the chance to cut it right in half which is not what we want. I don't believe the gap is adjustable on the linguini side...
