Adding more yeast, yea or nay

The generic " beer yeast" is the way the maker of the kit keeps you from just getting the particular strain of yeast they use and buying your own ingredients, thereby bypassing them altogether. Keeps you coming back to them because of the taste the finished beer has, which will be different...

    Trub

I think it is called trub and it has yeast and other stuff that did not get fermented in it. If you did a good job of racking to secondary and a good job racking to bottling bucket, there should not be much left to settle out. You could try putting a hop bag over the bottling wand to catch...

Adding more yeast, yea or nay

Yeah man, if you get a gravity of like 1.040 then you should re pitch some yeast. Try white labs liquid ale yeast. Check with your LHBS and they should be able to match the yeast to your brew. Keep your fermentor bucket at between 65 and 70 degrees. That should get the process going and you will...

    Extract is expensive!

I just did my third batch with the same tank and might have enough for my fourth batch. I guess I was a little off on how much was left in my tank. It does cost about $30 per tank unfortunately in Alaska. Realistically about $6-$7 per batch. That does not seem as bad.

Just want to talk about my first brewing experience!

I am new to brewing as well. I have read joy of home brewing, watched probably 100 YouTube videos and got some tips from my LHBS. Doing all of that, I still managed to completely mess up my first batch! However, even though I messed it up, it was still better than most store bought brews. One...

Citrus hops and best way to attain lemon flavor

I just got done doing a lemon lime heffewiesen and used .5 ounce of lemons zest at 5 minutes. It smells very strong of lemon in the fermentor. We will see how it turns out. One week in primary and then add a jug of limeade when racking off to secondary. I am interested to see how this fares...

Wow, $37 for 20' ? That's great, I paid $70 for 20' at Home Depot up here. That was the most expensive part.

    Extract is expensive!

That does not include propane to boil with. Takes about 1/2 tank per batch at $30 per cylinder. Adds $15 to every batch.

    Extract is expensive!

I live in Alaska and our LHBS sells 7lbs LME for a little over $20, white labs for $10, 2oz hops for $6, DME for $6 a lb. and specialty grains for 2.10 lb. total cost for a nice Heffewiesen is about $45. That's about the cheapest extract I can make up here. Sucks when I hear about the prices...

    Homemade wort chiller

I made one for about $100 with 1/2 inch tubing for my keggle and it will cool from boiling to 70 degrees in about 10 minutes if that, I think my last batch took 8 minutes. Well worth the minimal effort, and its fun. Check out YouTube.

WHY do people spend so much money on these?

I built one also, but can't hook the garden hose end to my water faucet inside at the kitchen sink. Is their an adapter to go from garden hose to kitchen sink?

    Shall I remove the Krausen

I agree, that happens with mine too. I brew mostly heffewiesen and it explodes in the first few days. After a week it drops down and at about ten days or so it will be just right. My name is Jake, been looking for some local home brewers to connect with. PM me if you want to bounce some ideas...

    differences in brewing costs

Dude I buy from arctic brewing supply also and I bought one of those $14 stir bars too! I though it was crazy, you can get one for $2 on eBay, more with shipping. But really! $14? Yeast costs $10 or $12 per vial which I think is also pretty steep. Problem is that shipping to Alaska costs just...

    Quick question About keging

Force carb at 30-40 psi for twenty four hours and shake it good for about 2 minutes about ten hours into it. After 24 hrs, turn down the psi to 10 or 11. You will be very happy with the first pour you make.
