Converting 1/6th kegs into fermenters. How much headspace to leave for krausen?

I'm fermenting an ale. I'm not really sure what pressurized fermentation is, but there is an airlock on the top so I guess atmospheric? Thanks for the reply!

Converting 1/6th kegs into fermenters. How much headspace to leave for krausen?

I'm considering fermenting in 20L kegs because a friend has several with damaged stems that I was thinking of converting. Just wondering how much space I should leave for the krausen.

15 gallon batches fermenting in 3 separate 5 gallon buckets? Need advice.

Hello HBT! I've got a question that might seem a bit stupid, but I just want to make absolutely sure. I have recently purchased a system capable of producing 15 gallons of boiled wort. I also have a temp controlled freezer that can accommodate my 15 gallon fermenter. However, if I were to use...

Primary has not reached desired gravity, but has been steady for 3 days. Rack it?

Thanks for the reply. No this was a Plato reading of 7.6 that I just used the conversion chart since everyone seems to use gravity. I'll raise the temp and give it a swirl. Should I be worried about Krausen stuck on the walls washing into the beer when I swirl the fermenter? Thanks again all!

Primary has not reached desired gravity, but has been steady for 3 days. Rack it?

I've been fermenting a Punk IPA clone for about 9 days now and I want to be at about 1.022, but have currently been steady at 1.030. Does this mean ferm is well done and I shouldn't bother trying to reach the target? Here is a bit of additional information. I fermented for about 3.5 days and...

    Dealing with frequent power outages.

Wow, thanks for coming through everyone. I've got some large bottles of water freezing and will throw those in there tomorrow and hope for the best.

    Dealing with frequent power outages.

I live in Vietnam where there are frequently scheduledpower outages that last 4-5 hours. I was well aware of this and planned to do some resaerch into what kind of generator I would want to keep my fermentation chamber (chest freezer) and eventually a modified air conditioner (glycol chiller)...

Is there an online almanac of sorts for hop alpha-acid percentages in the past?

I need the percent for Chinook and Ahtunam. *Fingers Crossed*. I'm kinda surprised producers don't have this on hand. Maybe if I email them they would know.

Are there any adverse effects in using an immersion fermentation chiller?

Sweet man. Thanks for the help. You brought up something that made me wonder about the fermenter. If I want to have external fermenters but don't have any closed space to hide them, what are the usual methods people use to seal their plastic containers from light? Lol smooth segway.

Is there an online almanac of sorts for hop alpha-acid percentages in the past?

Just wondering because a recipe I tried to put in for Punk IPA showed IBU ratings that were significantly lower than what I was getting in brewsmith when I input the hops with current AA%. I'm getting 110IBU in Brewsmith but the actual beer is only 45IBU while the recipe. The recipe is from...

Are there any adverse effects in using an immersion fermentation chiller?

Wow, thanks for the reply. That's a way simpler solution than what I was thinking about building. I have very similar vessels, but they are 60l so I'm wondering if I can find a wide enough cooler to fit them. Do you usually leave it open like that or do you have something to cover the exposed...

How big of an impact on my power bill will a DIY Aircon glycol chiller have?

I know there are a lot of variables here, but hopefully someone can give me some rough numbers based on their experience. How much of an increase did you see in your electricity bill by running this setup? I'd like to run a small window air conditioning unit as a glycol chiller pumping into...

Are there any adverse effects in using an immersion fermentation chiller?

I'm about to make one of these but before I go through with it I was just wondering if there are any adverse effects that the copper would have on the wort. Do most copper piping have some type of coating on the outside that I need to be concerned about? Will it affect the flavor? Thanks...

Did I ruin my chest freezer?

This happened to my refrigerator once and I called for service. They filled the thing up with freon and it worked again. Not sure if that's your problem.

How reliable are DIY glycol chillers made w/ a modified air conditioner?

What I would like to do is have a DIY glycol chiller made with an air conditioner like I've seen on some youtube videos. I would then like make a few immersion chillers inside of the fermenters to run the glycol through for temp control. My question is, how reliable is such a system? While...

Putting Brewdog Punk IPA recipe into Beersmith shows IBU that is 30 over. Advice?

Was using 5oz instead just an arbitrary reduction or did you calculate it out to match the real ibu of the beer? How did it taste in comparison?

Putting Brewdog Punk IPA recipe into Beersmith shows IBU that is 30 over. Advice?

Hello, I'm using Brewsmith and I've plugged in all the information to match Brewdog's Punk IPA recipe that they have on their website. However, when I put everything in to match the recipe, the IBU is 73 (in the software). It should be closer to 45 according to the recipe. I was just...
