    I'm in Love!

Just a thought- I've done a lot of temp control just using one of these and some frozen water bottles. I kept a pretty steady 50 degrees in the middle of July. I am sure you could find one much cheaper but just an example. For the D- rest I used less water bottles until it was up to temp...

snow is a great wort chiller

It's a solid plan! If you come up with something better to save water, let us know. I have been racking my brain and am always looking for better, faster ways to chill. I also still whirlpool while the wort is chilling using the recirculation to help speed it up.

snow is a great wort chiller

Mine's Basic- http://www.harborfreight.com/264-gph-submersible-fountain-pump-68395.html Can't beat the price and it is pretty simple. Keep your pot above the cooler and pump set up. There was an adapter that fit my immersion chiller and the side that would normally get hooked up to my...

snow is a great wort chiller

My advice on this in order to cut down on the amount of ice you need on hand is to start chilling the water in your cooler at the onset of brewday. Begin your cool down with your CFC or Immersion Chiller as normal then transfer to recirculating at about 100-110. I use an immersion chiller and...

    Yeast left out all day

You should be fine. It could take 72 hours before fermentation takes off and even then, the bubbling activity is not a clear sign of Fermentation. If you are super worried take a gravity reading after 3 days. If there is no change, then you may have an issue.

    OG readings are off

Do you top off with water? If so it could be that the top off water is not fully mixing with the wort. It happens a lot in extract brews. Check you hydrometer in plain water at 68 F. It should read 1.000. If it's higher or lower, make a mental note and add or subtract that to your...

My first brew of 2012 is a drainpour...

My buddy wears a kilt when he brews. I never asked if he is a traditionalsit nor do I want to know... I'll proudly paint my face in hop green and dawn my Star Wars shirt, Coveralls, and Interesting hat to slay the evils and unsanitary environments that plague our yeast bretheren. Every yeast...

My first brew of 2012 is a drainpour...

Supersticious? Brewer's hat- Every brewer should have an interesting hat to wear while brewing. So let's see- Star Wars shirt- check, Coveralls- check, check, Interesting hat- check, check, check. One question- underwear optional in this brewing getup?

    Force Carb Guidance

One thing that has not been mentioned because I was either taught wrong or everyone is assuming you'll do it is to purge the O2 out of the keg before force carbing. I was told do this so you do not oxygenate the beer. I'll hook up the CO2 at 12 PSI until it stops hissing, purge, then setting...

    Mashed too high, best "solution"?

I am not advocating this at all- BUT if you feel experimental I had the same issue recently. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/fixing-high-final-gravity-liquid-exo-alph-amylase-290268/ Once I determined my FG was too high (3 days at the same Gravity readin) I added the Amylase, heated the...

    Aging/Conditioning question

    East coast vs West coast

Man Pizza Port was awesome! Unfortunately its a good 7 hour drive for me to get it so I couldn't swap for that... Sorry! It was definitely a fun place to try because we were driving through for a family visit. If I can get the family to come up this way, I'll have them stop and pick some up then...

    East coast vs West coast

In- I PM'd you so we can work out the details there. Pliny may be difficult but I'll work on it and get approvals before I send it.

    East coast vs West coast

I am not a pizza connoisseur so I'll give you that one. But us West Coasters are not covering up poor malts, more like letting the hops shine. And personally I don't like overly malty beers. I propose a swap. I can source a few of my Fav's around here and will send them in exchange for some...

    East coast vs West coast

Ah- Got it. No worries. I thought it was kind of a cool way to learn about a few brews I should try. I pointed out that I liked Pliny and the retort was then you should try these Eas Coast beers. There is some trash talk but it's all in good fun, I think...

    East coast vs West coast

Wait- Eugene, OR/ Carlsbad, CA/ Seaside, CA are all no longer part of the west coast?? Why can't we have fun on this site? Besides if you thought it was a waste of time, why would you bother respndong?

    East coast vs West coast

Count me as one of the overly hopped West Coast IPA lover's. I like other styles too but Pliny has been the best beer I have had. I'd love to keep trying to find one that would top it- IPA or not.

    IIPA Recipe Suggestions Grains

I have a different understanding of 'Hop Bursting' than the OP. I have done a few DIPA with Cascade and Nugget. I start with 2 oz of Nugget at 20, 2 oz Cascade at 15, 10, and 5, 1 oz Cascade at 0 and 1 oz to dry hop. Maybe I totally misunderstood but I thought while hop bursting, you...
