    Ruined Fermenter?

Have you tried lemons? I had a power outage while i was away for 2 weeks in the summer. Had some fish go very very bad in the freezer. I tried everything to get the stink out. I rubbed the freezer with the flesh if the lemon, and let it sit for a day then clean it off. It was fine after...

calcualting mash and sparge water (batch sparge)

Just finished my brew session. Started with 6 gallons for my mash. Ended up with 4 gallons after first runnings. I added 3.5 gallons sparge. Nailed my gravity. And after boil off i had just over 5.5 gallons. Thanks again to all! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

calcualting mash and sparge water (batch sparge)

Yooper and Denny thanks so much. I will go with the calculations as my plan but measure as i go to make sure i end right. Hopefully ill be about equal mash volume to sparge volume. I am doing this this coming weekend. I feel i have a strong understanding now. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone...

calcualting mash and sparge water (batch sparge)

Hi All, I've been doing BIAB for almost a year now, but I'm making the leap to all grain with a regular mash. I plan to batch sparge. I have a 10 gallon cooler turned mash tun. I plan on brewing a Weizenbock with an OG of 1.081. The grain bill comes to 18.25 lbs for a regular 5 gallon...

Do i really need an 18 foot trellis

Thanks all. Going to have to think this through. I have an incredible amount of rocks in soil. Which makes burying a proper base a job i don't want to do. I've been told I'm building a deck this year, for which i will rent a post hole digger. But i don't want to wait until then to start...

Do i really need an 18 foot trellis

Thanks all for the info. I will grow them vertically but not to their full extent. My wife and neighbors might get mad if i let them grow to full height! Thanks again! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Do i really need an 18 foot trellis

So I'm thinking about growing hops, and have learned how high they grow. Do i really need i tall trellis or could i get away with something closer to 6 feet and just get less production and growth? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

What should my gravity be after the primary?

I have a solid plastic fermentor so i cant see inside. I just took a gravity ready and it was 010. Which is about where final gravity should be. Krausen is gone and it looks pretty clear in there. Some slight air bubbles coming to the surface of the beer. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

What should my gravity be after the primary?

Well ill wait a few days to take a reading. This brew is one I'm really looking forward to, so it is hard to be patient! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

What should my gravity be after the primary?

Well Im going to take some readings, and as you all point out it is done when it is done. I'll plan for longer times in the primary and seek out a zen master to teach me patience! Thanks guys. Again i appreciate the help! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

What should my gravity be after the primary?

Thanks Nuggethead. So 2-3 weeks in the primary? How do you determine how long to keep it in the primary? I heard it depends on the beer, but what does that mean? I thought higher gravity beers would be longer, and lower ones shorter. But how do you know how long? Thanks again! Sent from...

What should my gravity be after the primary?

So I brewed an all grain (BIAB) APA last Friday. Put it in the primary at a temp of 65F and used Wyeast American Ale II. Now I know no bubbles in the air lock doesn't mean there isn't fermentation, but I didn't see any activity until Sunday, and even then it was maybe a bubble every 10-15...

    Whirlfloc Question

Interesting to hear how long it takes to chill your wort. I have the same problem, but just use a copper chiller. I give it a stir about every 10 minutes. Maybe this weekend i will try stirring near continuously for the first 15 or 20 minutes or so. See how it goes. All though had i brewed...

    Refractometer readings for SG

Thanks BryceL. I noticed with beersmith the correction put the final gravity where I expected. Ill try my hydrometer on what i am bottling tomorrow and check it. LLBeanJ Thanks, thats what i was looking for. Im a scientist so i like to see equations like that. Its exactly what i was...

    Refractometer readings for SG

I was reading a thread on stuck fermentation and LLBeanJ asked the op if they were using a refractometer. This was the case for me. I know now that the refractometer reading after fermentation meeds to be adjusted. I now use beersmith to make that correction. But id like to know what the...
