Anyone put themselves into "self isolation"?

Big box home improvement store - Busiest day that I can remember since Black Friday......... People are not self isolating.....

Anyone put themselves into "self isolation"?

Too bad Flying Dog (in my experience) doesn't produce anything that you would want a keg of....

Grain miller, how important is it?

If a mill is set to a certain gap (distance between rollers) it should make ZERO difference whether it is driven manually or with a motor.

Anyone put themselves into "self isolation"?

If I have symptoms like yours I would certainly isolate. I have tried to Social Distance myself for years but since I work in retail that is very difficult. Luckily my area has been light on cases. It will get worse. As it does my isolation will increase.

Old dry yeast packets, any chance of problem other than low viability?

Since you did things differently I am not surprised that the beer tastes different.

    End of the world supply

co2 suppliers and LHBSs ARE "essential" businesses.......

    Storing bulk dry yeast

At the rate I brew now 500 grams would last me well over 5 years.... Plus I like to use yeast that fits the style of beer I am brewing so that would make one style of yeast in 500 grams last 2 - 3 times longer than that... or more. Not worth it for me. But I would do FloppyKnockers...

Grain miller, how important is it?

Don't soak the grains. Use a spray bottle to mist the grain. Spray the top stir, spray a little more. You just want to slightly dampen the husk so that it will crack into a few pieces instead of splintering into many pieces when milled.

How to prepare for a wee rough ride...?

I guess if it comes down to it I have over 100 pounds of grain. (I haven't been brewing as often lately - other projects) so if push comes to shove I could mill very fine and make some sort of bread out of the grain.

Bagged my hops.....did I decrease their effectiveness?

I use a 5 gallon paint strainer bag. I always have except for 2 ounces or less total for hops. I haven't noticed a difference in the smaller amounts. Can't say for large amounts of hops because I bag so I don't lose a ton of beer in the hop sludge.

    The Mr. Beer Hate?

And those are probably leftovers from Christmas season. I would say Mr Beer is a good introduction, but if you try brewing one and are interested in the hobby you should progress past it very quickly. Some have talked about cost. I saw a quote of about $100. My first was a kit - about $25...

    Sight Glass Problems

I question the need for a sight glass on a mash tun at all. You can get the amount of strike water before adding it to the tun. Same with the sparge water if batch sparging. I don't fly sparge so I don't know any need there. After strike, you don't really care what level is in the tun. When...

    Brew Boss Systems

I have to wonder what makes this pandemic so much worse than the ones in even the recent past that were about as bad. There were few closings etc. for those.... I think what is happening now might be necessary in the near future, but at present levels of infection I also think it is...

How to prepare for a wee rough ride...?

I work at a big box home improvement store - paint department. I have seen no change in the amount of customers. The last few weeks have been panic city the customers bought all the respirators, disposable gloves, sanitizers, and most of the paper towels. This is going to be around for a...

    Stirring during dough in

I too got an 18" whisk. The wires slice through the doughballs. Before than I used a paddle that I carved out of an oak branch that fell in my back yard. It was somewhat tedious. I would squash the balls against the side of the tun. It never took more than about 5 minutes. I tried a little...

How to prepare for a wee rough ride...?

Copied this from what I posted in the Coronavirus thread: ↑ Ok, go to 3000, that is .0001% of the US population. This is serious and getting worse. But the state of the panic at this time is extreme. Even at the rising rate of spread. Those that are hoarding today will probably need to go out...

How to prepare for a wee rough ride...?

This is what I am commenting on. It seems like people are stocking up for way more than a few weeks.

    Stirring during dough in

Until the recent LODO, there was not much concern with oxidation on the hot side. It was always best to limit except when aerating prior to adding yeast. I get very good beers without going to the trouble of LODO, so at present it is not worth it to me to do LODO.

    does extract go bad ?

If you want to spend a little bit of money against the risk of something not so good I would say go for it. The kit is already paid for. I would use amend with more grain and new yeast. But do a new kit first.
