    American IPA Citra Experiment IPA

I made an IPA with Simcoe & Citra. Simcoe for bittering, simcoe/citra mix for flavor, citra for aroma & dry hop. I love it and have received great reviews. IMO citra is great. Used Pacman yeast Cheers, Glenn

    3 Gallon Kegs

I'm OK with a check. For our area group buys, what we do is gross up the amount on paypal, so we cover the fees for the guy organizing the buy and his net is the actual amount. Whatever works best for you is OK with me. Will you quote us our total including shipping to our individual zip...

    refractometer question?

The best thing to do is test the SG reading on unfermented wort vs. your hydrometer a few times and see if a conversion is required. You are correct that the typical Brix refractometer is not calibrated for maltose and a minor adjustment is necessary between Brix & Plato/SG. This chart is...

    First Kolsch

I lager in my kegerator, which is set at about 41. If you are just using you freezer for fermenting/lagering, go closer to 33. The cold won't kill the yeast. When ready to bottle, bring the beer back to room temperature for a day or 2, then follow your normal bottling procedure. You...

Going to Use Gelatin, Need Advice

For the best effect from the gelatin, chill the beer first for 24 to 48 hours, then add the gelatin on top. 4 days with the gelatin should suffice. You're correct, chill haze has to develop in order to be removed. Finings work by attracting particles, such as yeast & proteins, into larger...

    Going to Vermont: Brewery Suggestions?

I neglected Madison on my first post. What a blunder ! We stop there every single time we get to Vermont. Make it a point to come in via Bennington so you stop by Cheers, Glenn

    Hello from Rutgers University

Ian, Welcome. If you're up for an hour drive, the Barley Legal Homebrew Club will be meeting this coming Tuesday night at 7:00 (or earlier at the bar) at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in Maple Shade. That's about 5 minutes from exit 4 of the NJTP. There is also a homebrew club...

    Going to Vermont: Brewery Suggestions?

American Flatbread in Burlington has very good beers and pizza - it's always crowded. The alchemist is supposed to be very good. I've been to Long Trail, I like their beers but the brew pub (if you can call it that) is nothing special. Cheers, Glenn

    Refractometer FG?

It looks like that price is only for the lens/hinge assembly. The basic model complete refractometer is $44. Sorry to be a buzzkill. Cheers, Glenn

    Question about using gelatin

It works best if you chill the beer to serving temp, then add the gelatin and allow 3 to 5 days for it to settle out taking the haze-producing particles with it. Cheers, Glenn

Appeared to Ferment for 4 days but has no Yeast Cake

That layer on the top will fall to the bottom once fermentation has completed. Taking a gravity reading is the only foolproof method to determine if fermentation is complete. If you take readings for 3 consecutive days and they are the same, fermentation is completed. If your hydrometer...

    WLP029 vs Wyeast Kolsch

+1 The WY and WL Kolsch strains are from different breweries and both behave and taste differently. I prefer the flavor of the WY, however, it blows off like a whale and don't clear in any amount of time that I can keep it around. WL on the other hand, clears nicely for me. I think that...

About to Bottle a Big Tripel - Repitch?

I would hydrate about 2 grams of US-05 in a 1/2 cup of water. Add that to bottling bucket with priming sugar and then bottle. I did exactly that with my last tripel and it worked fine. Cheers, Glenn
