RECIPE HELP: Hers and His wedding gifts

Solid advice and neat info about the Cholaca. I have some beer going now that I brewed for a homebrew fest. It’s all pilot batches so I’m nervous about how it will turn out even though I’m giving it away to people I don’t even know. I think for something like this I would want to plan a...

RECIPE HELP: Hers and His wedding gifts

One more thing to stew on. When I started using fruit, I assumed I was bumping the gravity. Obviously fruit has a lot of sugar but it also has a lot of water. If you check out the gravity of cherry puree, you'll notice that it's actually lower than the gravity of your RIS so logic would imply...

RECIPE HELP: Hers and His wedding gifts

I have used whole fruit and I have also used puree. Now that I've used puree, I'll probably never use whole fruit again. It's a lot easier to work with and IMO, you can get more consistent results since you don't have to factor in variables such as the ripeness of the whole fruit. The...

    Yeast Options for NEIPA

Really? It's $7. A pack of dry yeast is $4 so you're suggesting he should brew something completely different than what he actually wants just so he can save $3.00? Brew what you want to brew @Vas1234. As others have mentioned, for 1 gallon you really don't need to make a starter. I concur...

Vintage bottle capper...good idea or bad???

That it is. I don't like mine as much as my modern bench capper. But, you can't beat it for a towel holder.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I would caution against bittering with whatever you want. I have a 100% Riwaka pale ale right now that I'm not entirely happy with. Not all hops are isomerized with equal results. In the future, I will steer clear of high cohumulone hops for bittering. It seems like many of the tropical hops...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

You can add whatever hop, yeast, malt to BeerSmith you want. Just click on ingredients, click on the thing that looks like a hop, then click on the hop looking thing again and plug in the info

    competition

I agree with @Auger and @ba-brewer. If you want to keep improving, maybe consider getting into water chemistry or trying different techniques. Sounds like you have a pretty solid recipe and have scored well in competition with it. Take the next step in your brewing career whether it's water...

    Gravity readings?

What was your FG? You might have intended to mash at 155 but perhaps some variable made it not so (heat loss, false temp reading). Are you measuring your mash temp in multiple spots? Are you sure you're not losing much during the course of the mash?

IPA with no hops during boil

It only works if you keg. If you overshoot, you could vent. If you undershoot, you're attaching it to gas anyhow so it will get there. It just gives you a head-start. When I started doing this, I was spunding but I found that at the time I'm transferring, there isn't enough left to ferment...

    Question about bulk grains

If you want Pearl, check out ritebrew.com. They have great prices and reasonable shipping through a company called speedee. You're probably in the same shipping zone as me so it will be a 2-day delivery for you. They are my go-to.

Congrats! It's pretty incredible what some of these judges can pull out of a beer from sampling it. Sounds like you got some good advice and put it to good use.

    Serving pressure in kegs

That will do it. You can figure out how long of a line you need with this calculator. Also be sure to get 3/16" line: http://www.mikesoltys.com/2012/09/17/determining-proper-hose-length-for-your-kegerator/

Blue beer: lets beat this dead horse

According to this article, that beer you mentioned in the first post uses Gardenias: http://www.grubstreet.com/2014/10/abashiri-blue-beer.html There's also a blue wine that apparently gets its color from anthocyanin and indigotine. It looks like you can get both of those on e-bay...

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

Sure thing, here's the full recipe: 1 head of cabbage 1/2-3/4 bottle white wine 3 cups water 1/2 red onion 1 stick butter 1.5lbs thick cut bacon salt & pepper to taste 4 tablespoons minced garlic (the garlic was an afterthought and went on top of the weave which actually worked out since it got...

How to brew regularly without having a warehouse of beer on hand?

I disagree with that. The last thing I need in my life is to choke down calories I'm not even enjoying. I think it's reasonable that you can figure out what went wrong after a few pints. Why punish yourself further? Go the the store, purchase a few six packs for "research material", dump...
