Downside to draft beer at home

One thing I enjoy about home draft beer is you can pour as little or as much as you'd like. I have some 12 ounce nonic pint glasses, that really only hold about 10 ounces of beer with the top 2 ounces being occupied by the head of the beer. I find those to be good Sunday - Thursday glasses...

new Northern Brewer catalog. megapot 1.2

I get rust on the inside bottom, but I think it is more like tarnish. A quick scrub after each brew with some elbow grease removes it.

Pulled back muscle after brewing. Recommendations?

Im youngish, 33 and in pretty decent shape, I go to the gym on and off again and I am pretty active in general. I have definitely strained my back lifting and twisting and dumping wort and mashtuns etc. BUY A PUMP!!!! It has changed my life, I don't know why I waited so long.

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

I think it means whirlpool addition. Get temps down to 170-180 add hops and let steep for 30 mins. OR It means add hops right after flameout and let steep 20 mins. from what I've read about HT clones, I would go with the whirlpool - but all up to you.

Haze on BetterBottle, can I fix it?

I don't think its beer stone, I think it is a PET and Caustic cleaner issue. I'm worried I've created pitting or something along those lines that can harbor bugs.

Haze on BetterBottle, can I fix it?

Do you think star-san or vinegar would be acidic enough to remove if it were beer stone or some haze caused from hard water? I'm just curious, because I tried both to no avail.

Haze on BetterBottle, can I fix it?

Possible, I have soft water but I know adding oxiclean/tsp90 to water makes it hard as it is an alkaline cleaner. I'm going to try using an acid solution to see if I can fix it. I emailed BetterBottle and they were no help. Just gave me the company line to clean it how they recommend cleaning...

    Thanks for the responses.

Haze on BetterBottle, can I fix it?

I don't really care about it as long as it doesn't have a negative effect on my brews. I would just like to know what it is or if I've caused it in some way. It seems to get worse with every cycle of brewing/cleaning.

Haze on BetterBottle, can I fix it?

I have been using BetterBottles and other similar PET carboys with no issues for years. Recently, one of my newer (maybe a year old) BetterBottles developed a haze on the inside that almost looks like condensation that I can't seem to get rid of. I typically clean with poor mans pbw (oxiclean...

3,2,1 - A New Frame Work for Developing Recipes

A good alternative to SMaSH beers! I've brewed two smash beers in my beer history and while they were good, I found they lacked complexity I typically enjoy, with the exception of belgian style beers. Thanks for contributing.

DME + Hot Erlenmeyer = Bad

Two tips to save you folks a lot of headache 1.) Measure the amount of liquid you need using flask, pour into an appropriately sized pot, add DME, add heat and stir with whisk until dissolved and THEN use a funnel to transfer into the erlenmeyer flask and continue to heat. 2.) Use 1 drop...

Moving to all grain- Safest kettle size?

I use a 10g HomeDepot round cooler mashtun with much success for a while, doing 6g batches. I really struggled to do 10g batches with it. I upgraded to a 70qt coleman extreme and do 13.5g starting volume, I boil off a gallon in 60 min, I lose 0.5g to shrinkage (hehe) as it cools, I typically...

Strong Scotch Ale - 1.085 to 1.020 - repitch or RHAHB?

Just my two cents on this one, but 1.020 sounds about right for a Wee Heavy (maybe even a little low). And sweet sounds about right as they are malty sweet beers. Don't discount the effect carbonation has on a beer. It will lighten the mouthfeel and add carbonic acid and dull the sweetness...

    Mystery IPA ??'s

I would think Pliny or Jai Lai (sp?) Jamil Z has a recipe in Brewing Classic Styles that is a clone of Pliny The Elder -- I've brewed it and it was badass and really impressed some of my beer nerd friends. They didn't believe I brewed it and we drank side by side with Pliny and one guy thought...

    Sessionable SMaSH IPA?

I'm guessing you are going for a 5g batch? I think you need to up your hop bill. I would shoot for something around 40-50 IBU's. By session what do you mean for ABV? By definition, I think session is under 4%, but in today's craft beer world, they call hoppy pale ales around 5% session...

    Thin body issues

Could you elaborate on the biological & chemical process that happens after the beer is bottled that contributes to body? It was my understanding that with age come thinning body. As oxygen binds to the proteins in solution they precipitate out of solution and sink to the bottom, creating thin...
