I hate to do this, but I need help with a mash tun leak

I had the same problem with my mashtun. I simply got a silicone washer that was the same inner diameter, but the diameter of the washer itself was much bigger. Essentially, the same size washer but much thicker. I'm sure what island lizard said would work to, use a flat long washer. I...

    WLP005 finished below target gravity

The only problem I have managing s-04 is how quickly it ferments. I have use a cooler as a water bath to keep my fermentation temps in check, and s-04 due to its quick nature can really crank out some heat. Which, when s-04 gets on the warmer side can create some fruity esters that might be...

    WLP005 finished below target gravity

You can never go wrong making a starter and aerating. When it comes to making an ale that isn't a hefe, belgian, saison or some yeast specific style you can't really go wrong with US-05 or S-04 and even Nottingham for that matter.

    WLP005 finished below target gravity

Agreed with the above post. Another set of questions: 1) Did you take any measure to aerate such as pure o2 through diffusion stone, slosh around the wort for a while, or some other type of apparatus to to diffuse o2 into wort? If you only used 1 vile and didn't aerate then you're...

Confused about my Ward's water report

Like the guy said above, do you have a water softener? Anyway, never fear. A lot of grocery stores and wal-mart sell RO water on the cheap.

    Brewing Safety

@Vamptrump I have a set of silicone oven mits ($16) that are great for reaching into mashes with to tighten things up or insert the manifold you forgot to put in before you mashed in DUH!

    Another Carboy Horror Story

I wash washing out one of my better bottles, and granted, I'm not as careful with them, but I was shaking it over the sink and it slipped a little and hit the side of my granite counter and I was just thinking, "oh man, if that were a carboy it would be toast." Although, I probably wouldn't be...

    Another Carboy Horror Story

I am guessing you will be OK because you will be gradually decreasing the temperature. But I don't know. I had a 6g glass carboy break on me once and I stopped using glass. I was swishing around a gallon of sanitizer and set the thing down VERY gingerly on my concrete patio and it broke into...

    Low ABV ... whyyyyy

After reviewing everything, I'm going to go with -- make sure you thermometer and hydrometer/refractometer are accurate and calibrated. If you are using a cheap dial thermometer you are almost guaranteed to be mashing at the wrong temps. They are often off by 20+ degrees after the first...

    Help! tired of chucking beer...

I just have to ask, why aren't you following the direction printed on the bottle of star-san and using at the proper concentration? You need 5 mL of star-san for every 1 gallon of water. One TBS is approx 15mL, so you are using 30-45mL of start-san when you should be using 1.25mL. Star-san...

Anyone else annoyed with newer breweries using cans?

Cans are much better for the environment and require much less energy (fuel, electricty, etc) per ounce of beer to get to your refrigerator. You can fit many more cans on a truck or container and they are much much lighter. They are also much better at keeping beer fresh. No light, no...

First Batch - Didn't Rock After Pitching Yeast

This is debatable. Both Wyeast and White Labs say their limit for a fresh vial or pouch of yeast is about 1.060.

Why are so many people letting beer sit so long??

Also, not sure if you've seen this sticky: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=84005

Why are so many people letting beer sit so long??

I think the OP was excluding the beers you mentioned in his statement when he said "High Gravity" beers. Which would include many stout styles and definitely biere de garde. It is quite obvious that he was referring to standard and lower gravity ales (red, scotch, english pale, american pale...

    I am Confused!

To help with the clarification: Typically, I think yeast washing is used to save the yeast for a few weeks or months in a refrigerator, as opposed to going from fermenting one batch to the next batch as soon as the first batch is racked off the yeast. In addition, once yeast is washed brewers...

Anyone ever use Fast Pitch canned wort for starters?

Yea, I've thought about that too. Or just pulling off a 1500mL for a real wort starter just to pitch it back into the wort the next day. I guess you would have to be comfortable enough with your process to leave the wort for 12 hours before pitching your yeast. I've read thats what some no...

Anyone ever use Fast Pitch canned wort for starters?

You seriously make your starters outside? Wife can't handle the smell for 5 minutes it takes to make a starter? I know the drill though, happy wife happy life. I haven't gotten around to it, but I've always wanted to make a bulk starter from all grain. Make a couple gallons and then freeze...
