    Rye PA recipe help

Teacher, by any chance do you have a recipe available. I understand the concept of PM'ing, but I don't know the ratios to use. I'm a fairly new brewer, and at least like to follow a recipe for a brew at first. Once I get the feel for how it brews and tastes, then I like to tweak it a bit to be...

    Rye PA recipe help

Thanks TH, I saw that thread. I guess my biggest quest for info is if Rye can be steeped or if it will work well in a PM. If it needs to be mashed, what would the amounts/volumes be needed for a PM. I would really love to develop a recipe for my wife. She has been very forgiving in my brewing...

    Rye PA recipe help

My lovely bride has been requesting her favorite brew style. She loves the spice and hops of a good Rye PA. Founders Red Rye PA, and Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye as examples. I am only set up for extract w/ specialty grains, or a PM with extract. Can a Rye PA recipe be done under those constraints...

    Beer from Alaska

My wife and I took our Honeymoon on an inside passage Alaskan cruise. One of our ports of call included a tour of Alaskan Brewery. The samples were as big as the state itself, and I founds some great brews. Their stout was one of the best I've had, and the rest of their offerings are quite good...

Can I culture yeast from Juniper Berries?

Wow I thought you were smoking something when I first read this. But it is a source of a yeast culture, I don't know what or which. Check out this discussion in a sourdough forum - Juniper Berry Yeast Wild stuff, it sounds like it is difficult to culture to a strong stand, but I wonder if sugars...

Best beer stores in raleigh -- commercial beer selection, not homebrewing

Sam's Quick Stop is the best in the area for bottle variety. Peace St. is next. Team Beverage is owned by the son of the Peace St. Market, but their selection and turn over is not as good. The Flying Saucer is great for a beer bar, as is Tyler's in Durham. There are several local breweries where...

    Bottling sucks!

I bottle in 22 oz bottles, it cuts the time in half and you have some to share with your wife every time you pour. Dave:-)

    Wort hog????

Thanks Yooper, I appreciate the reassurance. I wish I had thought about pouring my make-up water over the hops. They were sitting in a big strainer, and it would have been so easy. I know this isn't a true SMaSH brew, but I think it's about as close as you can get with extract. A simple malt...

Airlock bubbles,, gravity readings, and bottling question

Haha, I know the predicament. I have a stout that should be finished, by the time it's been fermenting. But I still have action going on in the airlock. I went to take a gravity reading and found I broke my Hydrometer last time I put it up. So with my wife's urging I headed off to the LHBS to...

    Wort hog????

I decided today to make an extract SMaSh brew just for kicks. Also I decided to try leaf hops for the first time. I didn't have an establish recipe, I just kinda winged it. Here's what I did - 1# Crystal 40L steeped @ 150º for 30 min. Sparge and top off kettle to 4 gal Add 6.6# liquid light...

what to plant? (Piedmont region, Carolinas)

I was just about to ask almost the same thing. My LHBS is taking pre-orders for hop rhizomes up to the 15th. I got to get my **** in order. I am in a similar climate (south Raleigh, NC.) and was a little concerned about the heat and humidity. I have a Master degree in Horticulture, so I tend to...

    Tweaking a brew recipe...?

Thanks for all the advice :( It's in the carboy now, I'll find out if my tweaks worked in a few weeks. Dave:-)

    Tweaking a brew recipe...?

I brewed a PM/extract IPA a while ago. It came out good but could use a little more flavors. I am thinking of tweaking it to bring the flavor levels up to my pallet. Here's the original recipe with my tweaks in red 1½ # 2-row ¼# German Munich ½# Crystal 60L ¼# Maris Otter 2.5 gallon...

    My first brew!

I know that feeling. I am not a new brewer, but one that hasn't done it in a long time. I had to put pictures of my krausen blow-off up on my Facebook page. I was so proud, but most of my friends have no idea of what I am talking about. Enjoy the hobby, it's very rewarding and tasty. Dave:-)
