    Is this worth the money?

Thanks for all the help guys! Likes always, the amount of knowledge and help everyone gives is amazing. I'm not going to purchase it. Like a lot of you said, I should get focused on the all grain process and then find something that works with me. (I have to make sure I enjoy all grain too! I...

    Starter Eruption

Oh man that stinks but I guess you learned. I definitely had enough head space in mine but the CO2 just built up a ton in the solution. Any shake would set it off. The starter still worked perfectly. I brewed the brown ale yesterday and fermentation took off. I think I could see action in less...

    Starter Eruption

Hmm ya I use dish soap so ill have to switch it up and see if that fixes it. I do stir a lot when I'm around but I had just woken up the first time and the second time I just got back from work. I do want to make a stir plate. I have an extra CPU fan sitting around so maybe I should do that this...

    Is this worth the money?

Ya I guess you guys are right. That would be a lot of money. Even though it would be a one time purchase and I could reuse it, it still pricey. I'm still young so I'll probably keep slowly building up my equipment, and then maybe later buying or building a rack.

    Is this worth the money?

I'm a new brewer (been brewing for about a year). Right now I do extract batches on a stove top, but I am ready to move to all grain. I watch craigs list (especially for corny kegs) and I came across this brew rack and accessories. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/for/3804479847.html I...

    Starter Eruption

OK this is definitely very interesting. There aren't any normal visual cues that show that its fermenting, but the slightest spin of the flask erupts it. I just got home from work and took the tin foil off and back on to relieve any pressure. I gave it one quick spin and it still erupted. We'll...

    Starter Eruption

Hmmm. Ya that could be. Ill loosen up my rubber band. It was definitely a surprise I wasn't expecting.

    Starter Eruption

So I made a starter today with em whitbread ale yeast 1099. I came downstairs and saw it like the picture I attached. It didn't look like any action had started so I went to shake it and boom. The foam shot up and pushed up the foil. This didn't cause any problems and was actually kinda funny...

How many bottles to harvest yeast?

That sounds like a great idea, thanks! I'll just have to do a lot of drinking which I think I can handle! :mug: Anyone know how I can figure out how much yeast I have? Do you guys just have a general idea from experience and estimate it? Or is there a way to measure it? Thanks again for the help!

How many bottles to harvest yeast?

I have an IPA in bottles with Wyeast American Ale II 1272 in it. I want to harvest it for a recipe that I am doing soon. This is my first time harvesting from a bottle (well really harvesting at all). The process seems simple enough, but I was curious of how many bottles I should harvest from...

Finishing Fermentation Temp for my Lager

Awesome! Thank you! I also have to dry hop. So once it's finished Fermenting, I'll dry hop, throw in a keg, and lager.

Finishing Fermentation Temp for my Lager

Ya, I don't have the space to get a temp controlled freezer yet. I may keep it at 46 and wait a bit longer. And then bring it out and find a low temperature area to put it.

Finishing Fermentation Temp for my Lager

I've definitely got the "impatient homebrewer's curse." I'm sitting here drinking an undercarbed maibock from my kegerator, and I tried a IPA from a bottle that wasn't quite finished carbing. Anyways on to my question. I have a pilsner that's fermenting. I brewed 04/27, so 9 days ago. I keep...

    Critique my extract recipes!

Thanks for the input! I changed it to light DME and pale LME. That took away some of the IBUs so I did have to adjust the hops a bit. I just increased the amounts for each part. 1.5 oz fuggles at 60 min, 1 oz goldings at 30 min, and .5 oz goldings at 5 min. Hopefully that still works out well...

Hahaha love the reference. I did not know that about the victory and will switch it! Thank you!

Critique my first extract recipes!! Brown Ale and ESB

Awesome! Thank you! Definitely did not know that about the amber extract and will change that. Looks like when i change it, it takes away from my IBUs, so I'll just make additions to the amount of hops. I just bumped everything up. 1.5 oz fuggles at 60 min, 1 oz goldings at 30 min, and .5 oz...

    Critique my extract recipes!

So a year ago yesterday I brewed my first beer. Pretty exciting! But since then, the hobby has taken hold of me. I've brewed 11 extract batches, and learned so much about the process. Now I'm a teacher and summer break is coming up, so I'm planning a pretty big brew week for my first week...

Critique my first extract recipes!! Brown Ale and ESB

So a year ago yesterday I brewed my first beer. Pretty exciting! But since then, the hobby has taken hold of me. I've brewed 11 extract batches, and learned so much about the process. From cleaning and sanitizing, to fermentation and yeast starters, to kegging and carbonation. I've read books...

    Advice to new brewers

I agree with this. I'm 2 days away from my one year anniversary of brewing (woo!). I've done 11 batches of all different beers, but I keep it simple by just following extract recipes and focus on some of the important basics. I think I still follow a nice progression for learning. I started...

    Step up starter question

Quick question on stepping up my starter. Can decant my starter and add my boiled step up DME straight to the flask on top of the yeast cake? Of course once it's cooled down and other tools are sanitized. Can I pour it right on top and keep swirling?
