Bummer - my local bottle shops hang onto bombers for homebrewers and give them away (we're a non-deposit state). If you can't find a shop owner able to help you out then as others suggested I'd recommend Craigslist.
So I got back from my men's league hockey game...the area where I dry out my equipment is close to where I store my HB supplies. I went to grab my spray bottle of Febreeze to make the equipment stink less before laying it out in front of the fan. When done I realize that the spray bottle I...
Yep - I heard they are slating putting it out in October if all goes well with their new CA brewhouse. I can't wait - easily a top 5 beer for me.
I also can't wait for a clone recipe (I'm expecting liberal use of hop extract again.)
That one is out there, but pretty cool. Pretty light stuff from the same guy that did "Oldboy".
"Departures" is a great, feel good Japanese flick and "Kikujiro" is a bit odd but had me howling at a couple points.
Yep - if you're in Boston proper then go here. If you happen to be to the north of the city check out Redstone Liquors in Stoneham - great guys there.
I like Audacity of Hops (Belgian IPA) by Cambridge Brewing Co. Pretty Things also makes a great saison called Jack D'Or - I generally don't...
That would definitely make sense. I did skim off the top of the brewkettle and didn't mix thoroughly before taking the sample (and I did stir in very well when incorporating the sugar.)
When measuring efficiency using preboil, should I be using the preboil wort with or without the sugar...
Pre-boil (pre dextrose) I was at 6.1 gallons. 4.75 gallons went to the carboy after a 90 minute gently rolling boil (still figuring out boil off/wort chiller loss rates and hop spider displacements)
Thanks
Hey guys,
I did my third AG this weekend (5 gallon clone of Pliny the Elder) - with my last AG batch I got 72% efficiency but this time around I ended up with 59% (using the same crush settings on my mill). My target mash temp was 151* - using Beersmith I used 18.3 qt of 165* strike water...
QFTMFT. Stone "paint" comes off very easily after a one day soak in my Star San seconds but if I try to soak them in vintage Star-San stuff it seems to lose its' oomph. #0 and 00 steel wool helps things along a bit.
Yep - shop around for prices. My place does tanks for $13 - other "while you wait" places command $20+ around here.
I picked up a second tank, so as far as my fantastic wife is concerned the cooking tanks are adequately filled at all times.
This link helped me out quite a bit with my last batch (also my first AG.) It definitely put me in the right ballpark for hitting initial temps. That said, I've since purchased a Beersmith license. :)

Thanks guys very much - I think I was stirring enough to break up any doughballs, but not even close to 10 minutes (I was a bit paranoid about keeping the cooler open since I was already at the desired temp.) Next time I'll strike a bit higher and stir with gusto.
Much appreciated.

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a bit of guidance here - this past weekend I did brew #5 (Two Hearted clone, AIPA) which was the first time I used my cooler MLT (Coleman 52QT Xtreme.)
I preheated the mash tun @ 175* for 30 minutes before adding my strike water. Ambient temp was 45*.
So was...
Hey guys - I'm going to be trying out my first non-BIAB all grain brew tomorrow - does this crush look OK or do you think it needs more/less mangling?
Edit - better pic below
Thanks!
Yeah - on "Oz" they killed a bad guy with glass that way. Please be careful.
That's a bummer, but at least there weren't any injuries from the drop.
I'm still a NOOB and use glass but learned by batch #4 to move those suckers as little as possible - every time I pick it up I get a healthy...
