Porter OG Pre-Boil vs. Post Boil Issues

Yeah something doesn't seem right. I need to take actual measurements tonight and see what I started at and what I ended at. I referenced some dings in my kettle that were my start and stop points. I will measure the water at those heights and see what we come up with. Thank you!. I will post...

Porter OG Pre-Boil vs. Post Boil Issues

I would like to also add the following: 6.75 gallons of 1.045 pre boiled wort Boiled 90 min: ~5.5 gallon post boil of 1.056... By my calcs, this is what it should be. The Stone recipe says it should be 1.65...

Porter OG Pre-Boil vs. Post Boil Issues

The refract was calibrated with distilled water about 2 moths ago. I will re-calibrate tonight and see if it is off. I will double check my volume as I remember where it was at when the boil first started, around 2" from top of kettle. I will see if maybe I sparged a little too much water...

Porter OG Pre-Boil vs. Post Boil Issues

Yesterday I brewed a Porter/ In the recipe once punched into beersmith, it called for 1.049 pre-boil and 1.065 post. I was at a 1.047 pre boil, Which I thought was a pretty good mash efficiency. But when it came to the post 90 min boil, I was only at 1.056. I was 9 points off and that doesn't...

    counter flow vs plate chiller

I have a question: I was thinking about getting a plate chiller. Has anyone put the plate chiller into a bucket of ice water, to make the cooling even better?

Floral and Soapy, lots of head ret....

I have a hop stoopid clone that came out a little floral and has tons of head retention. I fermented in primary for around 2 weeks, then racked for 2 weeks the dry hopped for 5 days, cold crashed for 2 days and then bottled. I bottled around 3 weeks ago. Soapy a little bit, bitter and floral...

    Late Fermentation.....?

http://beersmithrecipes.com/viewrecipe/505946/hop-stoopid-clone Here is the recipe I entered into Beersmith. I would hold off on the bittering hops just a little at the 90min. Has a little too much hops, but then again its hop stooped. It turned out well, I did have the hot fermenting...

    Late Fermentation.....?

Recently I brewed a Hop Stoopid Clone. Turned out alright, not amazing. Now I know I had two technical mistakes. First, I pitched @ 76-77 degrees. Second I fermented around 76 degrees. I couldn't get my house down cold enough. Even with wet towel around carboy and fan. I used my immersion...

    Culturing Yeast First Time Tips

I will be brewing a porter soon with WLP002 yeast. I have another recipe that calls out for the same yeast, and I want to use that yeast for both batches to save $ and to learn something new. The second batch will be a few weeks to a month after the first batch. So I had some questions...

    Specific Gravity Corrections

They are around $15- . Great investment. You can sample hot wort with only a drop or two of fluid. This is great so your not wasting so much beer as you would a hydrometer. But the only down fall, is once the beer is fermenter, there is alcohol in the samples you take. This throws off the...
