    Pac-12

Riverly games will move into the first couple weeks of the season and might not be every year. That’s what happened when Utah went to the PAC-12 & BYU went independent. It was weird because I woke up one morning excited I was going to get to watch Utah play more games (because I refused to buy...

Brand new brewer with bottle problem

The rubber gaskets aren’t a matter of how long they last, it’s a matter of storage. If they are stored open & in a cool, dry place, the gaskets can last over a decade. When I bottle, I put the sugar in first & then rack in the beer. It results in better mixing without needing to stir.

Half Gallon Brown Glass Growlers that Take Regular Crown Caps?

Mr. Beer makes some 0.74L (25oz) PET bottles with plastic screw caps. That’s probably your best bet if you don’t want 1L or 2L swing tops.

    Vacation to Seaside Oregon

It’s been a couple years, but we mostly hang out at the beaches and drive to lighthouses. My cousin used to live in the area. I’d meet him at Seaside Brewery.

    Random Drunken Thoughts Thread

I just saw a rant against drinking “plant based beer” and it was not a parody. Which one of you broke the space-time continuum?

    Lagering in mini fridge?

Finding a mini-fridge that would hold a 5-gallon fermentor was my biggest problem. Once I found one, I gently tilted the freezer plate down so it would turn the whole interior into a freezer. (Don’t break the refrigerant line) Then I used a temp controller to set fermentation & lagering temps...

    Tinnitus

Man, I can sooo identify with this. I’ve had tinnitus since I was about 10 when a firecracker went off near my head. The ringing comes & goes but it’s always worst when everything is quiet. A year ago, I went through a couple bouts of severe vertigo. It was so bad at times I’d have to lie...

    Negra Modelo

Munich malts are one of those it’s worthwhile to look up and run the calc. Some will self-convert, some won’t. CaraMunich definitely won’t self-convert.

    Negra Modelo

“2 row” is pretty generic. Technically, all the grains are 2-row except for the 6-row. It’s almost as generic as saying, “hops.” 6-row is weird if it isn’t heavily adjuncted.

    Negra Modelo

I don’t know how accurate it is, but Clone Brews has it as: 78.5% Pilsner Malt 15.2% Vienna Malt 5.1% 60L Crystal Malt 1.3% Chocolate Malt The mash is: 122F for 30 min 150F for 60 min IBU = 27 with 1oz Hallertau & 1oz Tettnanger for 50 minutes & 0.5oz Tennanger for 10 minutes. Yeast is Wyeast...

    Its been 4 years.

Welcome back. I’be been a mostly-off and on brewer for the last 7 years. I’m curious about the MO & wheat combo. It’s something I’ve never considered. How does a 60-40 or 50-5 ratio turn out (not necessarily for IPA purposes).

    Relocating fermenter for bottling

If you have a dishwasher, opening the door and putting your empty bottles on it makes a great bottling location. Any spills go in the dishwasher when you close the door.

    Adjustable Bed & Snoring

I’ve seen three general treatments for apnea: 1. CPAP machine. I had no problem adapting to one. I think it’s because I was wearing a half face respirator occasionally at work when I got it. It was just a matter of learning how to sleep with that much pressure on my face. 2. Dental...

    Adjustable Bed & Snoring

At my last trip to the sleep doc, they finally saw my RSD in action. Running & punching are my main symptoms. The punching has almost completely gone away with a CPAP. They talked to me about the Parkinson’s risk but I have no family history of it for 3 generations. So they told me to start...

    Adjustable Bed & Snoring

I concur with DBHomebrew, talk to a doc about apnea before throwing $$$ at an adjustable bed both for your wallet’s and your health’s sake. I had really bad snoring & undiagnosed apnea for years. I didn’t go to the doctor until my wife made me. I was only sleeping 3.5 hours a night and my...

What is the best way to age a Doppelbock?

Depends on how flocculating your yeast is & how high your ABV is. For most yeast, 6 weeks is fine but 8 is pushing it. If your yeast describes itself as high flocculating, you’ll want to cut that down to 2 - 4 weeks. It’s also my experience that bottle carbing becomes significantly slower for...

What is the best way to age a Doppelbock?

The thing to remember is traditional schedules revolve around seasonal brewing before refrigeration. The other thing to remember is the point of lagering is that it’s cold. So if you can do cold for shorter, I think you are better off than going warmer for longer. The general rules of thumb...

    Which BIAB do you like?

I have a keggle and, until recently, had a The Brew Bag for it. I burned a hole in it on my last batch, which means I should be more careful and probably add a false bottom to my keggle when I replace it. But, it’s a great 1 vessel system and I can easily do 5 - 10 gallons of “normal” sized...

    Best mead you've made?

I used orange blossom and mint honey with a sweet mead yeast. It tasted like an orange mimosa. I regret only making 1 gallon of it.
