    Celebration Clone High FG

I should have kept it in the carboy on the yeast longer. The thing is is that I know better! I'm now kicking myself that I put it in the keg with it being such a high FG. If the yeast were not done with what they were doing wouldn't there be some sort of off flavor? Diacetal? When I tasted...

    Celebration Clone High FG

I aerated with a diffusion stone and disposable O2 tank from Lowes for about 45 seconds to a minute. A problem i do have with that is that the stone is on the end of a piece of tubing and i cant seem to get to all the way to the bottom when I aerate

    Celebration Clone High FG

I swirled the carboy around numerous times and as fermentation began to slow I put an electric heating pad on low on the side of the carboy, which was inside my winter jacket. Yes my thermometer is accurate, I checked it with boiling water as well as ice water.

    Celebration Clone High FG

I brewed a SN Celebration Ale Clone 13 days ago with WLP 001. My recipe was: 13.5# 2-row 1.5# Crystal 60 I boosted up the recipe up a bit because I wanted to brew a 5.5 gallon batch to end with 5 gallons of beer. The original recipe in BYO calls for 12.5# of 2-row and 15oz of crystal 60...

    Oatmeal Stout Water Profile

That's what I did. Really simple to do. Just use an empty water bottle, take a sample of your water and send it in. If I remember right it's only about $16.

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

Facts about what? I think the email response I got from Five Star in one of my previous posts gives the facts on Star San and cloudiness that I'm sure everyone was looking for. What do you have more questions about? I will try to answer them the best I can.

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

Brewing with spring water or distilled water is perfectly fine for an extract brewer because the extract contains the minerals needed for fermentation. During the making of extract the water is evaporated out but the minerals remain in the extract (calcium, magnesium, chloride, sulfate, and so...

    Oatmeal Stout Water Profile

I do use a camden tab to rid my tap water of chlorine. Being an oatmeal stout I definitely want that mouth feel and increased maltyness. You think cutting out the 1g of cacl2 will make a big difference?

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

I agree. My Star San has always been cloudy and I never thought anything of it because I have never had an infected beer. Now I know to use it once and get rid of it unless I use distilled water

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

I decided to go right to the source and emailed Star San. They responded almost immediately. Hello, I made two batches of Star San and tested both their pH's and both were under 3.5. One was made with tap water and the other with distilled water. The tap water was cloudy very quickly, while...

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

It's always looking cloudy for me too but I've never had a problem with an infection. If you look in the pictures I posted, the distilled water with the Star San came out crystal clear while the Star San with tap water is cloudy. Both have the same pH so I'm confused if they work just as good or...

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

Dr. Jon E. Hershkowitz does caution us by saying really hard water is not good for sanitizers. Correct me if I am wrong but I think the reason is because hard water has a greater resistance to the change in pH and Star San is supposed to drop the pH below 3. He also mentions that hard water will...

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

Listening to a podcast on the BN (Brew Strong) with Dr. Jon E. Hershkowitz from Five-Star the impression I get is that as long as the pH is below 3.5, it is still effective. Thoughts on this? Anyone else listen to this podcast?
  18. Johnnyboy1012

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

It is supposed to be below 3.5. Above that it starts to become less effective.

    Star San Cloudiness (with pics)

Until yesterday when a friend told me about cloudy Star San being ineffective, I did not realize that Star San solution is supposed to be clear. It has always been cloudy for me, but I have never encountered a problem with infection before. When looking into the matter I decided to buy some pH...

    Celebration Ale Clone Question

The thing is I already have the ingredients for this recipe. I have 12.5# of briess 2-row crushed mixed together with 1# of Crystal 60. I did buy another pound of crystal 60 today because I was thinking about adding more, so I figured I'd pick some up while I'm at my LHBS
