    Dogs

Yeah, it is a fun toy for them, he really loved it too. He had a hole in it by the end of the week though. Pretty tough toy.

    insulating your mash-tun for BIAB??

I've heard of people using sleeping bags and blankets. I also saw a video where the guy popped his vessel in a big electric smoker to keep it at temp. I throw a couple beach towels in the clothes dryer for 5 minutes and then wrap the vessel with the towels. On a colder day (50s, I'm in CA) it...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Taking a shot of that Dragonmead Tripel that Hurricane posted a while back. Halfway through the mash. Also kegging a Galaxy British Golden to pass the time.

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

I've measured conversion the last 2 brews, one a 13# grist, the other 7#, and both showed complete at 20 minutes, 149 F. I still go the 60 minutes, but I think conversion is mostly done within 15-30 minutes.

    Boring Saisons

Rhubarb! Never considered it. It's going on the to- do list!

    Boring Saisons

A friend gave me a box of pomegranates around Thanksgiving. I remember a nice pomegranate Saison I had out at Julian Brew Co last summer, so I processed them and added the juice to a saison (similar too the profile SoCal Doug describes) in secondary; it's wonderful, definitely not boring. It...

AM I Crazy? Or should beer be simple and enjoyable?

I try to keep the processes required to brew my beer as simple and efficient as possible and I don't really sweat it if volume, gravity, efficiency, or whatnot is off a little in the process (they're all interrelated anyway, so you can usually account for one based on another). Sometimes it's a...

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

I've seen videos of guys using 6-8 foot A-frame ladders for the frame and then attaching the pulley to the ladder. Depends on what height you configure your kettle for the mash (ground vs table top).

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

This is like the one I used to have. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQCHQHD/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 The welds eventually gave on the supports (probably got about 30 batches or so out of it). I can't find a link to the one I have now; It's a little more heavy duty, so should last longer.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Made a British Golden and hopped it with Galaxy, about 35 IBU. I have no idea what it will be like, but I thought a tropical fruit hop with some British, bready malts might be tasty. Just started to hit high kraussen; smells wonderful. Yes, I'm an airlock sniffer.

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

Yeah, I do the same (usually 8-15 lb grist) in one of those sink colanders with adjustable supports. I never sling a grain bag higher than the top of my kettle. And, it's double bagged.

    Why doesn’t everyone BIAB?

I think you ask a homebrewer why he does what he does and you will get as many different answers as people you ask. I started out on a completely home-made 3 vessel system my friend and I built out of old kegs, some copper, etc. Then kids came and work was crazy, so several years ago I gave...

What I did for beer today

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

Haven't tried that one, I'll give it a shot.

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

Yeah, my interpretation is that it is a good approximation to their house yeast. I don't know much about how WL acquires their initial yeast cultures, so it could be a bootleg of the Fuller's yeast, or very close to their yeast in Keeling's estimation. Either way, I love it for my Porter and...

English Ales - What's your favorite recipe?

Brew Your Own (2013) had an interview with John Keeling in which Mr. Keeling shared some clone recipes to approximate his beer. WLP 002 was prominent in those recipes. Maybe that's why the interwebs think such. Or maybe it is their strain and as you say, there has been some "drift". I've never...

What's the best bit of knowledge you picked up on in 2018?

Complete mash conversion of starch in many of my BIAB recipes is near complete within 20-30 minutes.

    Software Recommendations for eBIAB brewers

I've been using BeerSmith (v3 now) for 4 or 5 years, switched over to BIAB completely from 3-vessels around 2-3 years ago. Through trial and error, I've created profiles that fit my equipment for the most part. There are still a few quirks that trigger sudden bouts of Tourette's, but it's rare...
