Yeast Sarter in Flask - Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Thanks for all the suggestions. I definitely don't care to repeat this mishap again!

    IIPA dry hopping?

Did a IIPA and am ready to transfer for dry hopping. OG was 1.098 and finished at 1.021 coming in around 10.4%. I have about 2.3 ounces of Amarillo and 2 ounces of Simcoe I was going to use. I know that bigger beers require bigger dry hop additions but is this enough. Also would you add both...

Yeast Sarter in Flask - Lesson Learned the Hard Way

All good stuff here. I did wonder about adding the DME beforehand but was worried I'd end up with a big DME ball that wouldn't dissolve. I will give that a shot next time before I heat it up. Will the anti-foaming agents like fermcap or any others cause a decrease in head retention of the...

Yeast Sarter in Flask - Lesson Learned the Hard Way

I knew someone would be able to explain it. Great info! I didn't figure I was the only one this ever happened to. It all makes perfect sense now. Thanks

Yeast Sarter in Flask - Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Whats funny is I put quite a bit of thought into not breaking the flask which is why I ended up doing it in the garage on a propane stove. I heated it up slowly (which still didn't take long) as to not change the temp. of the glass to rapidly. Didn't really consider that the physics of the...

Yeast Sarter in Flask - Lesson Learned the Hard Way

I have made many yeast starters on the kitchen stove in a regular pot and using a growler to grow my yeast in. Always wanting to improve my process, I purchased a stir plate and a couple of 2000 ml flasks. This seemed like the way to go because you could heat the flask and never have to...

    Surly Coffee Bender Clone Advice

IMO....it will give you the smoothest flavor with the best head retention due to the decreased oils extracted. Greatest thing about home brewing is experimenting. Do it one way....do it another...and see what's best....generally it's pretty drinkable and you can determine what you like the most.

Effects of a Low Boil on Clarity?

I just remind her every time she gets her nails done or her hair done, that's another piece of brewing equipment or batch of beer for me....works rather well most of the time.

Effects of a Low Boil on Clarity?

It has been my experience that a good rolling boil is best. Adjusting your profile for your equipment( if you're using brewing software) to account for evaporation loss and adjusting the recipe for the intended OG and volume is better than modifying your boil vigor. There are other factors too...

What came in the mail for you today?

I just got an oxygen regulator from Williams and was here in 3 days via priority mail which was only 30 cents more than regular shipping. Haven't had any experience from FedEx ordering from them yet. I was shocked it got here so fast!

    Decided to put back in

I do a lot of reading on here but rarely post anything. I've been brewing awhile now and have obtained a good bit of knowledge from everyone so I decided to support the cause. Thanks to everyone who is sharing their knowledge and experience here.......it really is priceless.

    Surly Coffee Bender Clone Advice

I have used coffee several times with good luck. Cold brewing has always been my process. Probably the best I can relate is my breakfast stout. My most recent batch I cold brewed 1.5 oz of each type of coffee that is in it (3 oz total). I use a french press and the final amount is 2 cups of...

    Need a burner.

I am new to HB Talk but have been brewing for some time now. I used to use the standard Wal-Mart turkey fryer with a 10 gal kettle. Recently my brother got me a Hurricane burner from Midwest Brewing in Minnesota for my birthday. This thing is unreal. It puts out 60,000 BTU's with a pressure of...
