    Brewing log book

I like the book from Basic Brewing. It requires no thinking and it is very easy to reference. As cellardoor mentioned the 2009 book is gone but BB usually stocks the next years book in October or November... www.basicbrewing.com

    Draft Magazine?

IDK, from the website it looks like Cigar Aficionado. It might be cool if you live in a big town with lots of taps but in the sticks I would just get jealous of all the good beer I'm NOT drinking.

    Twist on White Beer

Boy, I never thought I'd see that in a brewing recipe... In all honesty it sounds like a really cool idea. I have been toying around with the idea of a Wild Rice beer so I can appreciate your idea. Good luck!

    English ale work for sour?

I am pretty sure I have an unintentionally sour Ordinary Bitter in the bottle right now. I had a bottle last night and it wasn't too bad... I am going to sit on the other bottles for now and see what develops... I noticed "The Ring Of Death" on several of my bitter bottles last night, that's...

2 1/2 gallon batches and yeast

Check this link out... It will tell you how much yeast to pitch based on the viability of your smack pack. http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html I brew 2.5 gallon batches and was surprised to learn that sometimes, one smack pack isn't enough...

My pellicle, let me show you it.

Cool... Is the full recipe posted somewhere?

My pellicle, let me show you it.

Nice, my son says "hello", he recognized your avatar from the other site... Did you age your own hops?
  8. J

My pellicle, let me show you it.

Very nice jkarp... Did you use aged hops and if so what kind and how much??

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I brewed up an American Amber Ale today. The recipe is basically Jamil's from Brewing Classic Styles. My OG was a little high but everything else went just fine.

Brew Binge: 2 days, 4 recipes, 25 gallons

    Wow! Awesomely ambitious! Great work.

Add water to grain or grain to water

This is interesting... I have always added water to grain and haven't had a problem with doughballs, but I am doing small batches which I am sure makes a difference. I may have to try it the other way next time I brew... Good info, thanks!

Is Marris Otter worth the extra cost??

I like the MO as well but I don't know if I could justify the cost unless I was making a lot of bitters. I do suggest you buy a couple of pounds for a single recipe because I think you will like it.

Small (2.5 gallon) All Grain Batches?

I have never brewed anything bigger than 2.5 gallons... It is easy to do inside, it allows for more variety and you can get away with a smaller brew kettle and a smaller (or no) starter... I say go for it!

First AG and things to record for future reference.

Hey jaja, I recommend the Brewer's Logbook from the Basic Brewing website. Here I was horrible at record keeping but this has everything you need. Ah heck, it looks like he is sold out of the 2009 logbooks but I am sure he will be getting the 2010 books out sooner rather than later.

Kid sneezes in mash, news in 2-3 weeks...

You could name "Snot Wad" ale or something like that...

Drinking my first all grain batch

I have to admit, I went right from Mr. Beer to AG so I don't have experience making real extract beer. I just like the mashing process though I am certainly not opposed to extract.

    Spent grains and composting

^^^^ That's what I do... As for reducing the smell in the pile I would go along with the others suggestions of adding grass clippings or even some small twigs etc... Make layers of different materials and you will be good.

    Improved head and drinkability

According to the fine people at Miller a "third" hop addition should help with your head retention. (obviously this is a sarcastic post...)
