Fellow homebrewers, meet my new beer engine . . .

I'm digging this idea and formulating a plan as I read though the thread. One of my favorite things when traveling in Europe is the beer, which is why I started brewing my own. I miss the real ales from England so I want to get something like this set up. So what do you guys who use the RV...

    Are starters light averse?

I'm just wondering. I've been keeping my starters in a closet and out of the light to this point, but now I've built a stir plate and I have no outlets in that closet. I can move my starter elsewhere in the house if I need to but I hear a lot of people talking about keeping their stirrers in...

Stir bar woes, aka, is this normal?

I have a working stir plate now! And I can use it to start my first starter tomorrow for a brew-day next Wednesday. That's about as far as I can get the vortex down my 2L flask without the bar getting thrown but, from what I understand, that's more than enough. I'll crank it back...

Stir bar woes, aka, is this normal?

I'm using a 2" bar that I bought off ebay. I think at first my bar was all funkily magnetized. But after spending a night attached to the HDD magnets, it snaps right to the center now. Unfortunately I snapped one of the magnets last night while I was trying to get it centered. So now I'm...

Stir bar woes, aka, is this normal?

OK, I got the magnet to hold the stir bar in the middle, now I need to get it balanced so it stops throwing the bar at speeds high enough to get the dimple lower than half an inch from the surface in my 2L flask. So, tips and tricks for balancing the magnet?

Stir bar woes, aka, is this normal?

Wow, that's a lot of overnight replies! Thanks for the quick turn around. :) I'll have to play with it more when I get home from work and try increasing the spacing, but if I put the bar right down on the magnet, it slides off to one end of the magnet and can't be centered at all so I'm...

Stir bar woes, aka, is this normal?

So I'm going though the home stir plate assembly that everyone seems to do. I took the magnets out of an old hard drive and got two strong magnets. I have a 120mm fan that I mounted them on (stuck together). But the stir bar always gets thrown. I think I centered the magnets well, the fan...

First Wort Hopping: To replace which addition

Well crap. Now you have me worried that my Oktoberfest is gonna be jacked and underhopped. :( So then do the volitale oils that aren't boiled off thanks to the "then a miracle occurs" part of FWH mask the bitterness? All the IBUs are there but you can't taste them because the flavor is so...

Did you try this recipe? How'd it go?

First Wort Hopping: To replace which addition

But that just doesn't seem to make intuitive sense to me. How would putting the hops into the wort even earlier than the start of the boil, result in less bitterness? The same hops and the same alpha acids are still going to be in the boil pot for the full 60 minutes of the boil to...

First Wort Hopping: To replace which addition

Well, I just used the FWH to replace the 60 min boil addition. We'll see how it went in September! :D

First Wort Hopping: To replace which addition

OK, I'm starting my Oktoberfest tomorrow and I've been thinking about using a FWH with it. I've been reading everything I can find about it but it's still not clear to me which addition I should move forward to the FWH. I've read some folks who say to move your late additions forward to the...

    Feed a starter?

Very well then. Barring anymore unforseen issues, it'll get pitched tomorrow!

    Feed a starter?

So I got my starter all made up last Friday so it's be active and ready to pitch after my Saturday brew session but due to unforseen burner problems, I never got to brew last weekend. So guess what I'm doing this Saturday! :) My question is: since my starter has been chillin' for the past...

    Filling kegs only half way?

    Hehehe, "gallon jugs". :mug:

    Filling kegs only half way?

Ingenious, a growler! Why didn't I think of that? Or a two liter PET bottle would be great too. Alrighty then. It's settled. It's a keg system for me. Huzzah!

    Filling kegs only half way?

I'm thinking about upgrading into a kegging system because I'm tired of filling bottles. But I'm worried about portability since we don't get many visitors to our house but we do go meet people elsewhere. So what I'm thinking is a party-pig for portability and a real keg system for the other...

    6.5 Gallon Carboy Dimensions

Hi there. Does anyone have quick easy access to a glass 6.5 gallon carboy? I'm at work but need to know the size of one to see if a freezer I'm being offered can fit one with airlock. I'd like to get it to start brewing lagers (I already have a temp controller) but if I don't decide today...

Keg CO2 with 12oz paintball gun tank

Thanks for the tips folks. :) Once I get my keg I guess I should take the CO2 cylinder and the keg fittings with me to Home depot and see what I can make.

Keg CO2 with 12oz paintball gun tank

I'm thinking of getting into kegging because I'm tired of bottling. I've been looking into the necessary hardware, and I came across an interesting idea from Williams Brewing supply here: http://www.williamsbrewing.com/BREWER_S_EDGE_PAINTBALL_TANK_R_P1791C148.cfm I already have a paintball...
