A friendly place for friends who drink

Got into brewing cause step-FIL did it and I thought it was cool, plus beer is effing expensive here. First batch was when I lived in OK for the summer two summers ago. Thought it could be a fun bonding time with both BsIL. Was a heffe extract with steeping grains since we had no temp control...

    Post your infection

I agree, especially if the bubbles have veins. Now they've got enough oxygen to really establish themselves though, so give it a week and I'm sure you'll be for sure that it's an infection.

Baking bottles with Beer Saver "Sicone" caps - EPIC FAIL

Yeah. So going with that in mind, I highly recommend going with the foil caps. Outside air getting in after they cool isn't going to contaminate anything, as one poster mentioned. They don't let any contaminates in, they're reusable, and they can withstand being baked. Win, win, win. This is...

    Step Mashing Techniques

Hey Gavin, had one more question about the decoction: I think you said that I should boil it for about 20 minutes, so I guess the rest of the mash just continues to rest during that time? Or should the boil only be something around 5 minutes, since this is already a dark beer?

I'm with you. Most commercial IPAs are way too bitter, or way too sweet. I don't do IIPAs at all. I've never really had an east coast style, but I believe the most recent one I had was very similar to that one, and a lot like I make my own IPAs. Because I reduce the bitterness to fairly low...

I have thought about it. I do BIAB in the bucket, with a batch sparge. If I do that, I won't have the ability to heat up the sparge water. Even with adding the boiling liquid, it shouldn't be raising the temperature of the entire mash anymore than planned. The bucket is rated to be able to hold...

Preparing my myself mentally for the big decoction brewday on friday. Trying to get this all processed so I don't feck anything up. I mash in a plastic bucket, usually wrapped in all kinds of ****. It's a 30L bucket, and my first infusion will be 23L at 147F. This will be an est. total volume of...

    Post your infection

Weird... that's exactly the opposite of what this thread is supposed to be about. This is supposed to help the new brewer have assurance that they don't have some super long named disease - by being able to compare their brew to the pictures of the infections versus the ones that are labeled...

    Inkbird Itc-308 Review

In continuance with the honest review: The thing still works great... Except when I'm cold crashing. It seems to be kicking on my freezer even when it shouldn't need to kick it on. Obviously something faulty with it. I can have it set to 0.5C, then once it hits 0.8C the freezer kicks on, it...

Ok, the wife chose the dunkel. Next brew after this one will be the vienna lager, though. She liked the dark lagers we had in prague, so I'm guessing she'll like this one.

Those both look great. Now I'm gonna have a tough time deciding which one to go with. Might let the wife decide. So should I only do the one decoction then? I was thinking of trying it again up to mash out temps. So it would be infusion to beta rest, decoction to alpha rest, decoction to mash...

A friendly place for friends who drink

Alright looking like life is gonna be too busy right now to brew with the brew partner. So I gotta get a brew day in this week. Will be using the same lager yeast I used before, and want to do a decoction. Maybe two enzyme rests then a mash out, wish would be two decoctions. Don't need anymore...
