    Low Cohumulone

I have geeked out on hops at the Mad Fermentationist's site, here is one of his articles with links about the components of hops. http://www.themadfermentationist.com/2012/12/west-coast-ipa-recipe-hop-oil-analysis.html Current convention regarding cohumulone is that lower levels will give a...

My 2nd try at a Citra APA. Thoughts please

Congrats on your burgeoning brewing obsession! The Bee Cave PA is supposed to be 39 IBU, so sounds like you got double the IBU? From Ed Wort's recipe: Boil & Hops 1.0 oz Cascade 6.6% at 60 min. 0.5 oz. Cascade 6.6% at 30 min. 0.25 oz. Cascade 6.6% at 15 min. 0.25 oz. Cascade 6.6% at 5 min...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

The short answer is yes. You could replace some the pale or Munich with Vienna. I love Vienna too, and use it in combination with pale and Munich in my pale ales and IPAs. As for using it in the IRA recipe, it may get lost among all the Munich and dark crystal malts. If you brew this recipe...

Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Levitation

It was a very good beer. I am sure there is some subtle difference with Mt. Hood, but it did not seem like the Crystal was missed in my opinion. Cheers, Tim

Can you Brew It recipe for Firestone Walker Union Jack

WLP200 is a blend of WLP001 and WLP002 right? That seems like it would work great in any IPA.

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

If you did 4 weeks in primary (must be at FG)and have a lot of trub in your bottles, then your hypothesis may be right on. All that material may cause CO2, to come out of solution rapidly. Keep brewing! Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Glad you like the beer! Like Shananigans said, if you bottled before FG, you have extra fermentable sugars in your beer then you added priming sugar, so you have way more carbonation than desired. If you hit FG, you may have simply added too much priming sugar, which would give you the same...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

The 90 minute boil does add a touch of color, but not significant. Every brewer experiences differing volumes of boil-off, so your OG will depend upon how much you boil off per hour. I use 1 gal/hour as my standard and that works for my system. If you want 5.5 gallons at end of brewing, with...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

I would bitter with the Columbus, and then sub the Simcoe dry hops with Falconers or Citra. Best Brewing!, Tim

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

I used to do a 90 min boil on all my beers, it's drives off more unwanted compounds from lightly killed malts. This was just habit and probably unnecessary. The longer boil also adds more color and maybe some extra carmelization. That said, I do 60 min boil now with no noticeable difference...

WLP 940 Mexican Lager Yeast-Thumbs Up

Me too. There are a lot of recipes in the HBT recipe database. I am going to do this as a Negra Modelo/Dos Equis Amber kind of beer: Dos Negra Clonish Vienna Mex lager 3-A Vienna Lager Author: T Date: 3/29/14 Size: 5.64 gal Efficiency: 82.0% Attenuation: 76.0% Calories: 172.6 kcal...

WLP 940 Mexican Lager Yeast-Thumbs Up

The White Labs site has it rated as 4/4 for a doppelbock and 2/4 for oktofest. "From Mexico City, this yeast produces clean lager beer, with a crisp finish. Good for Mexican style light lagers, as well as dark lagers. This is one of the best lager strains in the White Labs yeast bank; try it...

WLP 940 Mexican Lager Yeast-Thumbs Up

Hi brewers, I've been brewing lagers for years with various American and European strains. My lagers have always turned out well, but I must say the WLP 940 -the Modelo strain from Mexico is the easiest, quickest lager yeast I have ever used. I brewed a Premium Mexican-American...

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Congrats on the great score, and making the beer work! Regarding the floating dry hops, with whole hops you just have to wait for them to submerge, or weight them down in a hop bag to sink(I use sanitized glass marbles). At 4 oz. Black malt the beer was brown? right? Cheers, Tim

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Hey Doublehaul, I would shoot for around a 1:1 BU to GU ratio, so if you are at 1.080, I would go for 80 IBU. Try to get most of that increased bitterness from the later additions.

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Hey DH, I would just increase the 2-row pale malt. I feel that increasing the other malts would lead to a higher than desired F.G. Much more Munich and it may be a bit too malty? The color will be about the same assuming the volume brewed is held constant. My 2 cents. Glad you like the beer! I...

Recipe Critique/Thoughts on a Dry Hop

Simcoe and Columbus are nice together in the dryhop. Green Flash Westcoast IPA uses those hops in combination through boil and dry hop. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Specialty IPA: Red IPA India Red Ale

Cool, another variation to add. All Nelson IRL! (with two lager yeasts! ) The color is more deep red(16-17 SRM) than standard red on the original recipe. It is a beautiful beer when it drops clear. The lighter version is about 15 SRM. Hope fermentation goes well and it is an enjoyable beer...
