The easy way to drain a BIAB bag

I hang mine (I do 10 gallon batches) till it stops pouring wort out, then I toss it into a 5 gallon Homer bucket with holes drilled all over. That bucket sits in a bigger bucket, and i push on it with a lid.

    Pellicle Photo Collection

It was a basic Apline Spring Clone. Pretty normal grain bill / hops, just used a Kolsch yeast at a higher than normal temprature... The full recipe is in my thread linked above.

    Infected Alpine Spring Clone

Then ef it. I'm going for it. Bottle as usual? ~4oz of corn sugar per 5 gallons depending on temprature. Should I lower this amount since the buggies might fully attentaute the sugars producing too much CO2? I'll throw it in bottles today if it tastes reasonable...

    Pellicle Photo Collection

My undefined and unintentional pellicle. Anyone have an idea what this could be? Better question, what the heck should I do with it? Please see my thread here for more details.

    NB box as 12-pack flat

I do the same, but with printer paper boxes from work. Using some extra cardboard from other sources, you can create 24 packs. The lids of the boxes even fit back on if you're using 12oz bottles. I also like to cut a peice or cardboard the size of the bottom to soak up and spillage while...

How to step up a yeast starter

Does this make sense? I'm looking to step up a 4L starter to 8L starter, and I (unfortunately) don't have time to chill/decant.

    Rooibos African Ale recipe help

I just did one of these. You can find my thread here. My thoughts are: Keep it as basic as possible to try an pull out as much tea flavor as I could. I used pre-bagged Rooibos tea from starbucks... I used Wyeast American Ale II. The tea comes thro in a nice way. It smelled AMAZING in my...

Small Lager as Starter for Large Lager

Actually, I was just gifted a 10L Biotainer from work. The warehouse had accidentally cut open the bag that the sterile biotainer was in, and can no longer be used for processing. I'll probably just do the 8L starter using this and my DIY stirplate. Probrewer's Yeast Calc shows me: 2L...

St Bernardus bottle cultured yeast for ABT 12 attempt

Cool. Good info to know. I'm not too concerned about getting the same exact beer as the Westy... I'd just like to use a true Trappist yeast. I plan on breaking out the Westy in the next few weeks. I'll follow up back here if I could get a starter out of it.

St Bernardus bottle cultured yeast for ABT 12 attempt

Do you know if the US release of the Westy 12's were bottle condiditoned and non-pasturized? My brother was lucky enough to grab a brick, and after we sampled one, he gave me a bottle to have for myself. It's still sitting in cellar conditions... Would I be able to culture dregs from this?

How do you do ingredient substitutions?

I'm just happy you're supporting main street. It's much easier to order online if you ask me, but I still try and support the LHBS. IMO, if you're buying ingredients there, you can use whatever recipe you like! However, I've recieved a lot of great feedback by just talking over a recipe with...

    Big Brew Day Recipe (5/4/2013)

Homebrew Emporium is part of the Big Brew Day, and is giving away free ingredients for an English Dark Mild. I'm not a big fan of the style, so instantly I started thinking of a way to change it. The AG recipe is below: Malts 6.0 lb (2.72 kg) Maris Otter malt 8.0 oz (227 g) Golden...

    Crazy element mounting idea, keggles

No experience in this vertical mount.... but i'd be afraid that if you're not recirculating from that tee, that some wort will be "overcooked" in that area. I'm not sure if you'll get enough convection to move the wort up and out of that T. Could be comepletely wrong, but I'd hate to have...

    Experimenting with liquid maltose

1 - Yes. The LME should be able to boiled. When I used to use it in mini mashes, i would steep my grains for the prescribed times, then add the LME to the hot wort stirring vigorously. Bring it to a boil watching carefully for boilovers, and stirring fairly frequently to avoid anything...

Small Lager as Starter for Large Lager

Appreciated. I think I'll give it a shot unless I hear otherwise. I'm picking up 50lbs of 2row, and 25lbs of both Munich and Vienna on Friday. Pretty excited for my first group buy.
