    Uses For Spent Grains

Wow! Thanks! You just opened up a whole new world to me!

    Milk Stout.

I've never used lactose before- is it put in a strainer bag into the boil?

    Hello From WIS

Welcome! From the Madison area here and getting set up for BIAB myself. The simplicity of it it appeals to me!

The ever changing opinions of proper techniques in brewing

The "Semi BIAB" mash in a cooler looks really intriguing to me to avoid having to lift that grainbag out of the kettle.

    What stock pot size?

I just did a 5 gallon batch in a 7.5 gallon pot the other day. I think the boil started just over 6 gallons. I had a couple close calls with boilovers acquainting myself with the burner but it worked

    Size of first brew kettle

I was looking at larger pots and decided it was cheaper to go this route. I got the 30qt pot with burner from Walmart and it worked excellent. Got 6.5 gallons to a raging boil in about 25 minutes. My stove would take longer than that for a partial 2.5 gallon boil. :)

The ever changing opinions of proper techniques in brewing

I'm a newbie, so I am still in that filtering stage of figuring out what I like and what works best for me. I love to see all the different viewpoints and methods. At the end of the day it's only beer so it would be nice if a few individuals didn't hold their nose so high in the air.... but...

    Wjy are you doing it?

Yeah I also see brewing beer as an extension of cooking. I like to make things from scratch as it is fun for me. And I like good beer! I am not at a point that it is cheaper yet, Maybe in about 30 more batches I could say that the equipment has paid for itself, but I know that I will always be...

    Steel or plastic spoon

I used a stainless spoon for the first time last weekend. Unfortunately it was too short only about 2 inches above my pot. It got hot real fast! LOL

My new compact - semi BIAB setup

I was reading in How To Brew last night that Palmer recommended adding the grain to the mash tun, then slowly introducing water to it so that it is not shocked (?). Is this an issue at all using this procedure? Are you just heating up the water, pumping it to the cooler, then adding the bag then...

    Do Bottling Wands Go Bad?

same with mine. I noticed that the o ring had slipped out of position. Probably from sticky beer!

My new compact - semi BIAB setup

Now I am rethinking even getting the HLT and Mash Tun from NB. Might just go get a big rectangle cooler and use your method. This makes so much sense to me, especially with the option of your batch sparge technique.

My new compact - semi BIAB setup

Brilliant! I have been looking at doin a BIAB on my turkey fryer next but have been worried about holding the temps out in my garage during the winter. This looks like a great way to do this. Where does one go to get a bag or the material to make one? I have been looking at the 10 Gallon 3 piece...

    Advice for equipment upgrade

I'm roughly in the same boat as yourself. My plans are to begin brewing BIAB to get a feel for all grain without up front costs and to work on setting up a fermentation chamber of some sort. I am told that aside from sanitation, ferementation temps rank right up there in producing a great beer.

    Need some advice QUICK!

Wort chillers are also extremely easy to build yourself. I just put together one for $25 in parts. It took about 10 minutes and it works great!

    Do Bottling Wands Go Bad?

Thanks! I didn't realize it could be taken apart. Cleaned it up and hopefully it will be good as new!

    To my Utah friends...

All I know is that area is GORGEOUS! I travel to Vegas for business conventions fairly regularly and I always try to take an extra day for some Zion hikes. :)

Just made a unique bottle filling guide :-)

Is it alright to set a cap loosely on top of the bottle for a few minutes? I have always been scared of some sort of contaminant getting into my beer.

What did you learn this week?

I did my first full 5 gallon boil in a cheap turkey fryer and almost had some serious boilovers several times. I learned that because the pot is so much taller than it is wide, that the temperature difference at the bottom versus the top can be a big difference. I cranked up the burner to full...
