After 3 months of tireless workouts...

Congrats to all who have done well. Last year I lost 34 lbs., mostly because of watching my diet. I gained back 10 during the winter but am back on the wagon again. I did weight watchers with my brother and a friend and it's fairly easy to follow. I don't eat their packaged foods. I notice I...

Whirlfloc in Extract with Specialty Grain Brew

I used Northwestern Extra Light LME. Would there be any point in using Whirlfloc?

Whirlfloc in Extract with Specialty Grain Brew

Do I need whirlfloc, or Irish moss, in an extract with specialty grain ale? John Palmer recommends that you don't. Back in my previous brewing days I would use it in all grain and seem to remember it being used in extract recipes by Papazian and others. I did notice that my first brew since...

How long to sanitize by boiling?

I have a few sanitization questions in regards to boiling times. I'm trying to minimize some of them. How long do I need to boil my priming solution? How long do I need to have my immersion chiller in my boiling wort to be sanitized? Thanks!

    ? About adding extract late

I had also understood the 2 reasons for late extract addition was increased hop extraction and less caramelization. I also agree that in the case of a nut brown I see no real reason why.

    ? About adding extract late

I would think that the hop oils have already been isomerized when they made the extract so your boil time does not matter in terms of extraction. If you were adding whole, plug or pellet hops then you would need to be concerned about how long they were boiling.

    RIP Midnight, my Malaysian Wondermutt

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dog, I know it's tough but you know you did the right thing. I bet he's enjoying a nice big bone in dog heaven!

    About to Clean Immersion Chiller

Makes sense what you are saying then. I assumed ( always a bad thing ) that you were doing it to sanitize.

    About to Clean Immersion Chiller

I like the idea of using PBW to clean it but I do not get the reason to use Starsan. Since you place the chiller in your boiling wort for a good 10 to 15 minutes you are doing what Starsan does. I suppose you could soak the hoses in starsan to sanitize the outside, just in case it touches the...

How long to put bottle in fridge before drinking?

I tried my ale today and I'm happy. The beer tastes clean, no evidence of contamination or serious off flavors. Body is slightly thin but this was an extract beer with 1 lb. of crystal malt, OG = 1.045, FG = 1.014. There is a nice malt/hop aroma balance. Nice carbonation. Cloudy, as expected, 2...

How do good experienced Homebrewers aerate?

I like Greeneyed's suggestion. Actually I would just be happy with the 3rd part. I poured my wort through a strainer but since I used hop pellets it clogged pretty quickly. It did get a nice foam though.

How long to put bottle in fridge before drinking?

I put a bottle in this morning at 2 AM ( had the early shift today ). Tomorrow night I'm sampling. So that will be close to 2 days. This should be fun!

How long to put bottle in fridge before drinking?

My ale will be in the bottle 2 weeks tomorrow. I know it is best to wait 3 weeks before consuming. But I would like to test it before Christmas to see if I should hand some out to family, plus I want to brew this weekend and want to make adjustments based on this brew. So no problem. But...

    Oxygenating wort before pitching technique

I seem to remember that on the BBR episode they compared shaking to using an aquarium pump with air, not pure Oxygen.

Brewed on 10/13, Have Not Bottled Yet

Today I bottled, woohoo! O.G. = 1.045 F.G. = 1.014 So I'm guessing 4.2% ABV. I tasted it and the taste is clean to my palate. It's pretty hobby but I think that will subside. I'm getting a slight grassy flavor which I think is the hops, Styrian Goldings and EKG. It reminds me of cask ale I...

Brewed on 10/13, Have Not Bottled Yet

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. Thursday night will be bottling night. I got some clean bottles together, did a water rinse, and they are on the bottle tree. It would be classically funny if my procrastination created a clean, great tasting, beer!
