    clearing with gelatin

I'm a bottler and I used gelitin and whirlfloc (Irish moss) on a red, and it took no longer to carbonate. The only difference I noticed was clearer beer! This was the first beer I used gelitin in and just put it in the bottling bucket after preparing it according to directions with the priming...

Og Lower then Pre Boil gravity.

WVbrewer, I think you nailed it. I brewed today, inside on the stove, and got typical readings. From now on while brewing outside in the cold Ill try your method of collecting a sample, and checking it inside. Thanks again.:mug:

    Beers in Cleveland

+1 to fat heads. Went to Cleveland about a year ago and had a few of there beers, good stuff.

Og Lower then Pre Boil gravity.

Yes I am pretty sure its cooling enough before I take a reading. I typically use my stirring spoon and gather a bit of wort on it and let it sit out in the air for a few minutes to let it cool off to the ambient air temp. I know its impossible for this to be happening, so I know something in...

Og Lower then Pre Boil gravity.

Yea that's probably the best place to start. I was all excited when I entered the pre boil gravity into beersmith and it told me i had 96% efficiency! I should of known right then something was askew.

Og Lower then Pre Boil gravity.

It reads zero with our city water supply, I'm sure it may be off a fraction when using RO water. I checked it today before I started, and usually before every brew session since its incredibly easy to do.

Og Lower then Pre Boil gravity.

This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time a couple weeks ago I assumed I didn't get my 1st and 2nd running's stirred up well enough in my brew pot, so I let it go. Today I made sure to stir well, and i checked my gravity about every 15 minutes in the 60 minute boil. My...

    Hello from Ypsilanti!

2013's How many gal of homebrew in 2013

I assume we post for every batch? If so then 268+6 gallons lucky 13 cream ale = 274.

    Original gravity question

Your hydrometer could even be off 2-3 points. I had one once that was 4 points low.

    Best value Grain Mills

I really like my Barley crusher. The 10-12% jump in mash efficiency was nice too.

    How many yeast re-uses?

I typically use washed yeast about 4 or 5 times, then that's it. It helps bring the cost way down that's for sure. Besides, I cant bring myself to just flush them down the drain every time, I feel bad for them after all the hard work they did for me and my beer!

Is drinking non craft beer so bad?

Every beer has its place. When we go kayaking we usually take a couple cases of miller. It's a lot less of a big deal when your beer spills, or gets delicious river water in it this way.

Ever lose the plastic valve to your bottling wand?

I lost mine the other day. Thankfully it was after bottling and while i was rinsing the wand under the faucet in the sink. I still uttered a few choice words though.

    Tailgating Appetizers

One of my buddies makes "armadillo eggs". There jalapeños hollowed out stuffed with cheddar cheese, and encased with sausage. They always go fast!

Dryhopping with pellets - am I doing something wrong?

I just throw them in either before secondary and rack on top, or if its a long secondary for whatever reason, throw the dry hops in the beer for the last 7 days. As I usually only dry hop for 7 days, they mostly settle out by then. I try to move the carboy to the kitchen a day or two before I...
