Blichmann 3/8 hp Glycol chiller review

@highland_brewer Did you find that foam bar to be a good seal?

    What's Your Typical Conversion Efficiency?

@doug293cz So would using Kai's formula of FW_measured/FW_max eliminate the moisture content error? Built into the FWmax calc is the e_grain term. Why is that 0.8? Why not 0.75 or 0.85?

    What's Your Typical Conversion Efficiency?

Hey @doug293cz Why wouldn't this formula work for conversion efficiency? (Measured_Mash_SG - 1)/(Max_SG - 1)? If you have 10# of grain with a ppg of 37 and you mash with 10 gallons of water, your Max_SG would be 1.037. If you took a reading at the end of your mash and you got...

Quarantined in Wuhan - Name my beer

Random side note. One of my best friend's mom was the nurse when they brought him into the ER after he did that.

Anyone know if a 12" long 1.5" TC carbonation wand exists?

Yeah, I was thinking using those parts (TC with a gas post, silicone tube attached to the diptube, and a stone x barb fitting). I figured 15 psi might blow the stone off the tube though.

Anyone know if a 12" long 1.5" TC carbonation wand exists?

I like that first one from stout. That's what I'm envisioning, except a smaller stone.

Anyone know if a 12" long 1.5" TC carbonation wand exists?

Looking for a 1.5" TC wand, maybe 12" long, with a carbonation stone on the end. Preferably with a gas ball lock post on the TC end, but NPT would also work. I want to hang it down from the top of my fermenter to free up a port on the side of my conical.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I have the extended bracket and it's in the correct orientation. I didn't take pictures before I attached the extensions but the screw posts on them are definitely crooked.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Does anyone transfer to a keg using the bottom port? I put a sight glass on the bottom to make yeast dumping easier, but now I'm wondering if it makes sense to use the bottom port to transfer, too. It would eliminate messing with rotating the racking arm.

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

It looks like maybe you put a rod system across the top of the kettle and it rests on it.

How to hang immersion chiller in a kettle so it doesn't rest on anything?

Here's what I came up with. It actually turned out more elegant than I expected. I might get around to trimming off the extra threading but it'll work for now. I initially tried a J bolt but it had the shepherd style hook so it wouldn't sit flush.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Are anyone else's leg extensions crooked? I couldn't get any of mine to screw in straight and I had to force the legs to line up with the stabilizing shelf. Not giving me good vibes when I'm going to fill it soon.

How to hang immersion chiller in a kettle so it doesn't rest on anything?

I do electric brewing so I have an element on the bottom of my kettle. I use an immersion chiller to chill so what I've been doing is putting in a false bottom grate towards the end of the boil to keep the chiller off the element. What I would like to find is a way to suspend the chiller above...

BeerSmith 3: Difference between major and minor updates?

All I really need is estimated mash pH pre and post additions. I made a spreadsheet to calculate gravities, efficiencies and solve for salt additions. I just don't have a reliable way to estimate the mash pH based on the inputs to my beer. Sounds like maybe MME might be a better option than BS.

BeerSmith 3: Difference between major and minor updates?

Does anyone know the difference between major and minor updates in BS 3? I have BS 2 and find the water profile section to be worthless. I downloaded the trial version of BS 3 and at least it actually estimates pH in line with Brewer's Friend, Bru'n and MME. I don't want to throw good money...

    Spike's upcoming eBIAB system

I asked them this a few weeks ago and they said they were still working on the details. I suspect they already have it figured out but they didn't want to commit to anything just yet. I was in the midst of getting a 15 gallon kettle designed for eBIAB with them when they announced this so I...

    First Kveik Mead

I checked my gravity after 2 weeks and it was only 1.048 (SG was ~1.116). I added some nutrient to see if it picked up but after another 2 weeks, it was still 1.048 despite continuing to bubble pretty actively for a week. So I ended up a little shy of 9% with a nice mouthfeel. No perceptible...

New BIAB setup. Ss brewtech or Spike? Utah Diesel or Arbor Fab?

@dhoyt Are you doing threaded or TC ports? TC will give you flexibility if you ever want to do electric. They are easier to clean as well. The downside is all the fittings are generally a bit more expensive than threaded.

New BIAB setup. Ss brewtech or Spike? Utah Diesel or Arbor Fab?

I have a 15 gallon Spike kettle (V2 maybe?) and I used to use it for 5 gallon BIAB batches. I went with a 15 gallon kettle so I didn't have to worry about the size of my grain bill or the amount of hops I add during the boil or hover over the kettle for the entire time. I tossed an ounce of...
