    Quick hops sustitution question:

Let's keep the silly smartphone os wars for other threads....lol. Anyways I happen to be lucky in that it's not the other way around, I have an iPhone.

    Quick hops sustitution question:

Thanks guys, been busy getting everything going, just finally hit my mash temp, I'm an idiot and didn't check my recipe one last time, and thought my. Target mash temp was 162, instead of 152, which if it wasn't my second batch, would have seemed wrong right from the start, anyways, I added some...

    Quick hops sustitution question:

So I am brewing a big batch of Hefeweizen today, and I just realized I didn't get enough hallertau hops. I needed 2 oz not 1. I have cascade, saaz, and northern brewer hops in the freezer, can any of these be substituted for the 1 ounce of hallertau I am missing?

Dumb question on very active fermentation

And thanks for the couple responses on the airlock, I have to wait till I get home to completely clean it, but I have another airlock so I'll clean it off, sanitize, and get another on there tonight. I was using part of my star-san solution from sanitizing the airlock for the liquid in there...

Dumb question on very active fermentation

This is what I was thinking...I'm not sure I'll keep it in the fermenter to condition after its done attenuating. I'll readily admit that part of the reason is that I have a graduation party for my sister in law I'm going to be at June 18th, was hoping to have some to try by then. I'm...

Dumb question on very active fermentation

Another dumb question: I know many advocate long primaries here, however, I wanted to ask if there is any real value to leaving in the primary for conditioning when you brew beers like Weizens or maybe a Wit, where cloudiness is both acceptable and pert of the style itself? I know I will...

Dumb question on very active fermentation

I brewed a Dunkelweizen on Saturday (first batch for me), and fermentation really took off overnight yesterday, when I woke up, my Ale pail looks much like the carboy in the "explosive fermentation" thread in this forum, only my airlock did not come off. My Dumb question: To what level do...

First brew session, last minute advice

Ok so it's now been 29 hours since I pitched, and the fermenter is up to 65F which is the same as ambient. Sat there for five min, no bubbles, but the closet smells pretty funky, so something is going on for sure. Not really sure what fermentation smells like so I can't tell you one way or the...

First brew session, last minute advice

Well If that's true I should have a pretty good beer on my hands, but I read in a byo article that too much reduction causes off flavors, so I guess well see. Hope you are right.

First brew session, last minute advice

I definitely had some fun, good to finally just get a batch done, whatever the results. I ended up boiling and cooling another gallon, adding it, and aerating and pitching A little on the cool side, about 60F. I feel I did ok on sanitation, but a routine will make that go much smoother. I...

I have brewmaster for ipad but I'm not sure if it's full featured enough to replace a beersmith, I'll look into it today.

First brew session, last minute advice

Ok so from what I'm reading this morning, it seems like I had too aggressive a boil, maybe by alot. And I could be headed for some off flavors as a result. Guess I need to look into exactly what a slow rolling boil looks like. I'm thinking I should boil and cool a gallon of water and pitch...

I have no way to measure what's in the kettle during the boil at this point.

First brew session, last minute advice

I had one once of whole leaf hops in there, so like you said, not too much. My kettle is a very wide 15 gallon kettle, I measured the wort coming into the kettle by filling a container with the extracted wort as I was lautering, then emptying it into the kettle. Not an ideal solution but I'm...

Well I don't think I really was prepared for the amount of boil loss there was.....only got 4 gallons out of 7.25. Recipe said adjust for the 90 min boil but I had no frame of reference. Gravity ended up 1.063.

First brew session, last minute advice

No I was measuring the gravity at too high a temp, but at the moment the numbers don't make much sense that way either, gotta get the temp to 60 to be sure. Now efficiency and OG look way too high
