Bad News Brewery - Control Panel

Cheers, Great set-up, it's inspiring! How big is your box in order to fit all this stuff? Thanks.

DIY PID controller - beginner Arduino project

Sometimes simple solutions are better suited to simple problems... I am sure the PID library must be well suited to complicated processes, but it looks like in this case your if's are a far better solution. How did you interface the Arduino with the Processing? Did you program the PID frontend...

Where to place an on/off switch - 5V circuit or 230V circuit?

Thanks for the answer. I think I'll use contactors eventually to control high amperage.

Where to place an on/off switch - 5V circuit or 230V circuit?

Cheers, I am designing a PID based on Arduino for an electric brewing system. I will use the 5V circuit Arduino provides to trigger an SSR that will let high-voltage (230V as I'm in Europe) go through to a water heater resistance or water pump. I want to put a switch to ensure that the...

Electric brewery plans - need help

Hi there, The build is impressive, thanks a lot. I'm designing mine (a much smaller, eBiaB system) and it has been inspiring to say the least (although mine will work with European 230V). Sorry for my ignorance, but Mattd2, or anyone else, what alternative options do we have? Wouldn't it...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2010?

5 gallons Very-bitter-starter-kit 4 gallons APA 3 gallons Sweet stout 5 gallons Too-clear-Porter 5 gallons Hopefully-even-better sweet stout =34,003 gallons Well... hopefuly quality will increase proportionately with quantity in 2011 for me :mug:

The stupidest comment on your beer

I told my mom that I started brewing (In Southern Europe is far from being a common hobby...). Mom: Mmm... And do you save money with that? Me: No, it's even more expensive sometimes. Mom: Then... why do you do it? Me: Well, for my own pleasure! Mom: And wouldn't it be cheaper to buy beer...

    New to Brewing

My turn to ask a question. Why do you need a secondary for dry-hopping? I just tossed the hop (in a bag) in the primary and it seemed to work well. Is there something I am missing? Cheers.

    New to Brewing

Well... 3 weeks is indeed a minimum (although it is fun for newbies such as myself to open a bottle each of the 3 first weeks to see how the flavour and carbonation evolves, and it helps the wait :mug: ) I've read some beers (such as barley wines or high-alcohol beers) need months, even years...

What is worse? High temperatures or temperature fluctuations?

As it's been fermenting only 3 days I am afraid it is stuck. I will give a try to gravity check and follow your advice. I think next time my poison will be high temperatures instead of temp fluctuations :) Thanks for your answer.

    New to Brewing

Have a look here: http://www.howtobrew.com/section1/chapter8-2-3.html """ There has been a lot of controversy within the homebrewing community on the value of racking beers, particularly ales, to secondary fermentors. Many seasoned homebrewers have declared that there is no real taste benefit...

What is worse? High temperatures or temperature fluctuations?

Cheers, It's getting hot with summer, but still I decided to give it a chance and brew a sweet stout, hopping that the taste of the brew would hide any off flavours due to high temps. As air temperatures oscillates between 26ºC and 29ºC (some 79-84ºF), so to compensate I've put the bucket...

    Cheap design program recommendations?

I second Inkscape. Much more appropiate for labelling than Gimp due to its vectorial capacity. Furthermore, it is easier to do basic shapes than with Gimp. I'm nor Gimp nor Inkscape poweruser and I got acustomed to Inkscape more quickly for this kind of job. Cheers.

How to store *opened * LME and DME

This makes more sense... We do not have that possibility in Spain (that I know of), so I guess I'll go for DME whenever possible. Thanks.

How to store *opened * LME and DME

Thanks for your answers, they are enlightening indeed. Using DME instead of LME makes sense, but I restrict myself as the choices for malts are reduced. Would oil work as well as vodka? It's the way we save some foods here, but maybe the texture is not appropiate for LME... And, after...

How to store *opened * LME and DME

Dear all, I've just received a copy of Palmer's and Zainasheff's "Brewing Classic Styles", and I've seen that they often use quantities of less than a pound of LME. Where I live I can only buy extracts in quantities of about 2 to 3 pounts, and such I would have to use only part of the can...

Need a Flying Dog clone recipe

Thanks for the answer. Did the bag just have Crystal 120L? Or was it a mix with pale malt?

Need a Flying Dog clone recipe

Thanks for the info. I am surprised to see they offer "base grain" even with the extract options. How are those base grains used? just stepped as the specialty grain (which I guess is the American crystal 120L) or would they need to be mashed-stepped? If they need to be mashed-stepped, is it...
