Compression fitting from dip tube not air tight

They are certainly air tight if you tighten them down. You have to really crank down on them to compress the ferrule into the tube. Put some lube on it and tighten it again. Then wash clean. The ferrule is the small ring that goes around the tube inside the nut. Once it is tightened the ferrule...

Harsh smell coming out of blowoff tube

No ****, only a mistake I made once. First ferment in my new chest freezer and I got home from work and wanted a sniff of my IPA. Needless to say it was not the bouquet of centennial aroma I was expecting.

    Wrong or Right?

Go for it! You can do what ever you like. I think it would be appropriate.

    What happened to my Primary?

Don't toss it. I have had the same thing happen with oxy on bottles and in kegs. If you leave the oxy in too long it makes deposits on the surfaces. You can get it out with acid. I have used a strong Star-san solution(double dose) successfully a few times. I have also heard that vinegar and...

    Wine cooler fermentation chamber

Refrigerators only refrigerate. I have a wine cooler I use to ferment and it is ok but I like my freezer much better. Both are on single stage ranco controllers. The wine fridge can't really get below 45F and it is slower to react. You could use a 2 stage temp controller with a small heat pad or...

LHBS opened right around the corner

Nice, I see impromptu work night brews in your future! I work close to mine and even though I'm all grain, sometimes I'll stop in and grab stuff for an easy extract brew after work if I have an empty fermenter. I suggest a saison... don't even need room in the ferment freezer or any temp control.

    Cheap stainless hop spider

I use the 6" SS egg ring with a SS worm gear hose clamp. I just bent the handle into a hook that hangs on the side of my keggle. Works great! Super cheap!

    NOOB kegging clarifications

1)Yes, bc you have the time 2) One is fast and one is slow. By shaking the keg you are agitation the liquid which makes it absorb CO2 faster. There are 2 reasons why people will tell you not to "Crank and Shake" A) possible over carbonation B) by shaking you theoretically use up some of the head...

My beers all taste the same.

You must rinse the Oxy-clean off completely! It's soap! Star-san is a different story as it is a no-rinse product intended for food and bevarage. Oxy-clean is made for your laundry. I use it all the time but I am very careful to rinse the crap out of it with hot water. I am guessing that is...

Harsh smell coming out of blowoff tube

Might just be CO2. The first time I stuck my head down into my chest freezer after it had filled over night with CO2 it was quite a shock. It really stings the nostrils!

    Fermentation Temperature

Saison yeast preform well at high temps. I have used Wyeast 3711 French saison when my freezer is full and I love the way it tastes at high temps and it doesn't have the attenuation issues that the Belgian saison yeast does. Some Belgian yeast preform well at higher temps. These types of yeast...

To put hops in a bag or not, that is the question

I don't remember who I stole this idea from but it is awesome. I used to use a 4"PVC coupling as a how spider but after a while it was warping because of the heat. This method is all SS and is really cheap and easy. Use the 6" egg ring with a large worm gear clamp and any type of bag you...

My learning process thread - questions as I go

    1) yes 2) the SS braid acts as a filter to allow the now sugar rich wort to run off while the grain stays put so you can sparge. If you are just starting off I suggest going to howtobrew.com and giving it a read. "How to Brew" by John Palmer it the gold standard for basic brewing books and the...
