State Brewing Laws/ TN Beer Law Victory

Thank You! I knew some stores and brewpubs carry beers up to 6.2%, but I couldn't figure out why. This makes much more sense. I'm glad to see everyone getting angry about it. The more people become aware and make their voices heard, the faster laws will change. Regardless whether or not we...

State Brewing Laws/ TN Beer Law Victory

I've actually had a cop out here ask to buy some off me... haha... so I don't think many are aware. At least where I am, the brewing scene is little to none. Completely different than back in Jersey.

State Brewing Laws/ TN Beer Law Victory

Thought I'd post some new interesting information! I moved to TN about 6 months ago (from NJ) to immediately find out that it was technically illegal to brew beer that is over 5% ABV. By law, the definition of beer in TN is a beverage less than 5% ABV. Anything over that range would be...

how fast can I ferment a SMaSH?

Yes, definitely. Nothing wrong with that IMO, but others may disagree. Primary to keg, just be sure to rack carefully. It will change taste and condition further in the keg, but I personally do it frequently with hop forward brews. It is session-able and the hops will be fresh as possible...

Is there an issue with mashing for 75-90 min

Nothing wrong with a long mash. Some brewers mash overnight. The only issue is if you are particular with your temperatures...is to be able to maintain your temp over that time. Some brewers are afraid of a "stuck mash" which is when the mash gets too "soggy or mushy" and then liquid doesn't...

    Black IPA - Dry Hop?

Personally, I'd probably use them both because you have other hop flavors going on. An ounce of each should give you a nice bouquet, or 2 oz total. I've used up to 7 oz to dry hop, but that was a beer that would fill up the room with hoppy goodness. If you drink it fresh, 2 oz should be good per...

    What happened?

    Ok. Here is the Math from BrewR. The numbers are dead on. 12 lb Light LME: 1.037 (73.8%) 1 lb Crystal 60 L: 1.034 (6.2%) 1 lb Munich: 1.033 (6.2%) 12 oz Chocolate: 1.029 (4.6%) 8 oz Honey Malt: 1.030 (3.1%) 8 oz CaraPils: 1.033 (3.1%) 4 oz Black Patent: 1.028 (1.5%) 4 oz Malodextrin: 1.046...

Seeking help for a catastrophic contamination issue

Could be lots of things. Do you have a ball valve? If so, have you disassembled it and cleaned it out? Lots of people get infections because they forget about the ball valve on the kettle or other connections. Depending on how it tastes, it might even be possible to salvage it into a sour beer...

    Transferring to a secondary

welcome to homebrewing! The leftover yeast is what many people call a "yeast cake". It is all of the yeast that has multiplied and then dropped out of solution. As far as being foul smelling, it is probably fine. Yeast cakes definitely can smell a certain way. Since you are new to brewing, you...

    What happened?

I order from morebeer often. When I did their extract kits, I notice the OG that is "predicted" on the instructions is a little low (compared to actual), but it depends on the kit. Although I like their ingredients, I never depended on their directions or predictions. What you need to do is...

    German Nugget Hops?

Update: Emailed Nikobrew... here was the reply: "The German Nugget is just grown in Germany. There is not a difference in flavor or Aroma from the Nugget grown in the US. They are from the same variety stock." Makes sense that they may be slightly different due to growing conditions. I'll be...

    German Nugget Hops?

So this might be a stupid question Is there a difference between German Nugget hops and regular Nugget hops (which I read are American)? I got it in a random buy from nikobrew. Also got some El Dorado, Lubliner, and Herkules. Just unsure about the "German" Nugget hops. I've tried searching...

Lots of electric lurking. Why so much BIAB?

There are many ways to brew. I've brewed with a 3 tier, propane, keggle system before, but now I live in a small apartment. I brew with somewhat of a hybrid BIAB/ 3 tier system (at least conceptually) right in my kitchen and still knock out stellar brews. I don't see it as a downgrade at all. If...
