I just built the spider, don't have a pic with the muslin bag attached yet but there is a hose clamp on the under side of that funnel. Here is the basket:

I considered that approach, but as an eBIAB brewer with a stainless basket that takes up all of the kettle space above the eleemnt, it wasn't an issue for me. If I were a non-biab brewer, I would definitely go that route.

I had the same problem as the OP even with a very large spider. On my new system, I'm switching to a bag style spider and using the extra long 28 inch muslin bags. I don't care if the fine particles get out. That's what whirlpooling is for.

Hmmm, that's a good point. the 20 gallon kettle dimensions on the site say 21.25 inches high. Must be a mistake or old info that wasn't updated. I'm sure Darin could enlighten you.

If you are custom designing a system, you should just go based off of your kettle diameter and whatever fittings take up space inside of the kettle. Leave at least a half inch on all sides.

I think for the most part ppl DIY bc they're using their existing equipment to save money or bc they're use to it. Others, like me, are super picky and want a very specific setup. I think BB, smartly, came up with something that is very reasonably priced and satisfies most peoples needs. Still...

Those weight limitations are what led me to develop my own system, which uses the BB controller and element but a custom kettle/basket. I'm working on a separate thread about my build but I'm waiting to post it until I finish my brewery rehab and actually get to brew on the system.
