Intimidating brewing, sheesh (noob first post)

When I was gettng started, I read the posts bout how people had messed up their batches, but they usually turned out OK in the end. Go head and read those while you're waiting. Should ease your nerves.

    Calendar of Festivals

I'd like to either find or make a calendar of Colorado beer festivals in 2013. Anyone know a link to one?

    Bottling Day Disaster?

Be sure to come up with a good name for the batch. Maybe "Righty-Tighty!"

    New member.... New to brewing!

You're going to have a good time with this. I got started over the summer, and am pretty much hooked. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to upscale your capacity to larger batches, even if not a full five-gallons. I started with five gallon, but bought one-gallon growlers to play...

    Splitting a 5 Gallon Batch

I've made several split batches, and actually quite enjoy it. Most recently, I did full batch of a nut-brown, and then after two weeks, put two gallons from it into one-gallon growlers with some cacao-nibs for a chocolate "sub batch". I then bottled the rest. The spigot is the way to go...

    Prepping for first DME batches

Yes, I did get that. Thanks for checking.

    Prepping for first DME batches

Thanks guys, I appreciate it! All good information. What do you mean by "late extract additions." I'm not familiar with that. Thanks!

    Prepping for first DME batches

I'm planning on trying Dry Malt Extracts for my next few batches. I've found lots of discussion on the qualities of DME versus LME, and good information on making batch-size adjustments. But, I'm unclear if there are any procedural differences with dry versus liquid. Anything to be aware...

    Vac seal hops

Tanks guys, ths is great. I'm trying to move to smaller batches, and this will help me keep my cost per batch down.

    Vac seal hops

My local home brew store sells hops in vacuum sealed bags. But most of the packaging is more than a recipe calls for. We have a food saver vacuum sealer. If I open a package of hops, take what I need, and then re-vacuum and seal, will they last for a while in the fridge? Or once their...

    Chocolate - secondary

Thanks all for the replies. I think I'm going to go with the cocoa nibs. I'll check out our local organic market to see what they carry. My guess is that they'll have something there that will work. It seems the standard ratio is 8 oz to 5 gallons. Since this is only going to be a 1 gallon...

    Cold Fermentation Experiment

I think a long thermometer would be a good idea. The one I have now wont reach far enough. Theres a 24 inch one on amazon for $30.

    Cold Fermentation Experiment

I'm experimenting in my basement with a 6.5 gallon bucket sitting in a water bath in my camping-cooler. The bucket is filled to five gallons. It actually fits pretty well, but I can't close the lid on the cooler. So, I found some styrofoam sheets I had previously used in my old aluminum...

    Chocolate - secondary

Thanks all! The nut brown is going right now. Unfortunetly, I'm might have to put the entire batch into a secondary. I only got about half the hops out before pouring down into the carboy.

    Adding cocoa after fermenting?

I'm going to make a simple extract Nut Brown ale today - a full five gallon batch. But, when I go to bottle (I don't do a secondary), I'm thinking of putting a gallon or two into a smaller carboy and adding cocoa powder for a "sub batch." Then, letting that sit for a couple of weeks...

    Trying to get 50 "LIKES"

Hey guys - I've got a Facebook project I'm trying to get to 20 likes this week, and then 50 after that. If I can reach 50, I'm going to officially start a fundraising campaign for an iron-on t-shirt company. The name of the company will be called "Donate2" and the basic idea is to sell...

    Careless...AGAIN!

It hasn't started fermenting yet. I'm about to put the yeast in. I'm sure it will be fine, but man is it frustrating!

    Careless...AGAIN!

I dropped a pen cap in my full carboy. Can't get the stupid thing out.... ***relaxing*** Grrr.......
