    Should I finish with US05

I brewed a 10gal batch of English Ale 13 Nov. I had a 1.5L starter that my better half knocked off the counter the night before brew day (what a mess and we are still finding glass). Brew day morning I went to my local home brew and cleaned them out of WLP002 English Ale Yeast (4 packs) and...

    Thick Layer of Protein?

Dittos. I think Whirlfloc works much better than Irish Moss. That is a good looking cold break. Should make for clear beer.

    Yeast stuck to carboy walls

Looks like good brew to me. I have a Saison going on 4 weeks in the carboy and it looks similar to your pics. Nothing wrong here. Even if it doesn't fall off the side and drop to the bottom, you will pick up very little when you rack it out.

    Help on conical fermenter

I have two Ss brewtech conical fermenters. The 7gal and the 14gal - both w/temp controllers. Love them and never use my glass carboys anymore.

Adding a thermometer to a mash tun

I agree with Yuri_Rage. Unless,.... you are able to recirculate your mash and have an inline heat exchanger you can ramp on and off when temp falls or keep constant throughout the mash. I use a long probe on my thermometer and the recirculating mash eliminates temp stratification in the tun...

    Help save my Porter!

Happened to me one. Miscalculated the amount of priming sugar needed and bottled up a batch of Stout. 40 days later, it was nearly flat. I bought some carb drops, poped the tops, added one to each bottle and recapped. Your risk O2 getting in the bottle, but if plan on drinking them within a...

    Homemade HERMS System,....sorta

Quick update. Today's brew went off without a hitch. Clearest wort to date and post boil clarity after plate chiller was amazing.

    Homemade HERMS System,....sorta

I took my old copper wort chiller, placed it in my Igloo HLT, added a recirc valve to my mash tun and plumped up some lines. Mash Tun Out --> Tube --> Pump--> Wort Chiller In (Immersed in HLT at 160degs) -->Wort Chiller Out --> Tube --> Mash Tun In. 1.5L starter going and brewing tomorrow -...

    Fermerter Problem, No Power 24hrs

85F is mighty high unless you are doing a Saison. What was your original temp and yeast pitch? Only option you have is to maintain desired ferm temp and let it ride. Let it finish and taste it. If you like - enjoy! If not - let it kiss the drain. Making beer continues to surprise me at...

    Cider Gone Crazy!!

Agree - that is a ton of CO2 - it raged like that for well over a minute and then took another 4mins to calm down. It looked perfectly clear and still prior to the bump. More CO2 than what seems reasonable to be clinging to the sides or bottom. It was in a secondary and started in a primary...

    Cider Gone Crazy!!

Put a 5gal batch of cider together 7 weeks ago and used White Labs Liquid English Cider yeast - OG: 1.065. Racked into secondary 10 days ago at 1.010. Took a reading today and seems gravity is stuck at 1.008. I have another batch in secondary where I added 3lbs of fresh cherries. Anyhow...

Will (some) the Vanilla Flavor Drop Out

Thanks Sadu!!! Great news for my taste. I like the vanilla but let it become to pronounced before packaging. I plan on sampling a bottle in one month.

Will (some) the Vanilla Flavor Drop Out

Been working on an Imperial Stout for a while now. I added 4oz Cacao Nibs and 2 split down the middle vanilla beans to my Stout in secondary. About 5 days in it was simply amazing, wanted to keg but didn't have time and let it go for another couple days until the weekend. Man,.. what a...

    Gravity Inexpiclabile

I don't think a 1.2 liter starter would drop your gravity .011 points. Thinking more like a gallon for a drop like that.

    Problems with pH

I'll try to answer in a consolidated response. - On the assumption that my pH Checker is accurate after calibration using the correct buffers, my tap water through the filter, or straight from the tap, is 7.73. - I added one Campden tablet to my mash water - I checked my mash pH after...

    Problems with pH

Was always curious about my pH and just got a Hanna pH Checker. I calibrated it using buffer solution and brewed the next day. Initial mash pH was right at ~4.9 - 5.0. Added 1tsp of 5.2 pH stabilizer per instructions, stirred the mash and rechecked 20mins later and the pH was the same - also...

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

    First Cider

Great choice on the juice. What kind of yeast did you introduce? I've made cider with nothing but juice and concentrate a few times and love the clarity. Starts crystal clear, becomes cloudy and then clears up again. But,... I have always seen vigorous fermentation - looking like an air...
