    Fast Souring - Modern Methods

Barrel or Foeder? Seems like foeders like the one David Heath recently covered are very nice, but now $1100. Seems a similarly sized barrel can be found at MoreBeer for $359 plus shipping. Thoughts?

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

Has anyone either used the hole in the center of the glass lid for a LOC LINE mash return, or (carefully) drilled a hole in the glass lid to accommodate? By LOC LINE, I mean this: Mash Recirculation Return and/or Sparge Kit (locline) (brewhardware.com). I am just not in love with the stock...

Solera via Foeder Sour beer project idea help needed

I never heard or considered a Solera beer project until watching David Heath's recent video on the FoederSmith 0.5BBL foeder. From what I can find online, the possibilities are really interesting. I have always wanted to brew a 'true' lambic or Flanders Red, but held back due to the durations...

    Omega Lutra yeast?

Feedback/updates from earlier posts. Synopsis: I brewed an Oktoberfest and fermented it with Lutra, at the bottom of the temperature range and under pressure (10psi). The resulting beer seemed to improve on it's lager-like qualities with time and conditioning, but I was still curious how truly...

    Hop dropper??

Part of the assembly is on my fermentor, at pressure, right now and probably for the next couple weeks (lagering). I will post as soon as able, but I pieced my assembly together after pouring through the Spike Conical thread here on HBT. Butterfly valve from Amazon, sight glass from Amazon...

Lager fermentation: when to dump yeast?

Doing my first lager, a Doe Equis clone with Saflager 34/70 yeast. Started fermentation (OG 1.050) at 55F and after four days let it free rise to 68F where it stayed for 2 days and the FG was achieved at 1.009. I then dropped it no more than a couple degrees at a time, no more than 5 degrees in...

    Robobrew/Brewzilla Discussion

Looking for the right stand/table for a Brewzilla 65L that I just bought. I will be brewing on my back porch and want to just raise the assembly about 12-24" to make it easier to read the display (I am 5'8"), while still having enough room to lift the malt pipe out by hand. Any best practices in...

Spike CF5 vs CF10 for 5 gallon batches.

Looking at the same dilemma...get another CF-5 (and do the occasional 10-gal batch using both CF-5s), or get a CF-10. Does anyone have a size comparison with them next to each other? The CF-5 isn't that big, but I am wondering if the CF-10 is a leviathan in comparison.

Brewing an easy sour for my first all-grain brew

Lallemand Philly Sour yeast is an easy way to get a simple, sour beer, and much easier than the recipe listed above. It also ferments at room temp (70+F) very nicely--no temperature control needed. Many PS recipes out there, but I would use David Heath's (on his YouTube channel) Philly Sour one...

Spike steam lid used on 65L Brewzilla?

Just bought a BZ 65L and would really like to see Spike steam lid integration, if anyone has pictures or details.

    Hop dropper??

If you have a TC port on the top of your fermentor, you can piece together a hop dropper more cheaply than $275. I have one on the 1.5" port on my Spike CF-5 lid, and it works well--noticeable change in my dry-hopped IPAs. Arrangement would be the (0) lid port, (1) butterfly valve, (2) a sight...

(Relatively) Quick Flanders Red with Philly Sour & Brett only...done before?

Not yet, it's on the list of things to do. I may brew this in the next batch or so--please let me know how it goes for you if you brew sooner. There's also a Lallemand Philly Sour Q&A this week where I will ask about Brett co-fermentations (since they are both slow-ish).

Best way to sparge with BIAB Brewing?

I am cheap. I bought three plastic buckets from Home Depot, like $2.98 each (the orange ones they leave in the isles). I drilled holes throughout the bottom of one. When ready to pull the BIAB bag/grain, I put the holed bucket inside one of the other ones, using the handle to jam the bucket...

Need help deciding on which grain mill to buy

Had nothing but problems with my Barley Mill, and after a lot of research, I went with the Kegco KM11GM-3R . The difference was amazing, and using the standard gap settings my efficiency went up ~5%. I bought a corded, variable speed Metabo drill from amazon for $40 to drive it. It can chew...

BrewHardware RIMS package (Review from my experience)

I have a Brewhardware.com RIMS setup with an Inkbird controller and have had nothing but success. Only slight scorching was from a 113F to 154F rise only using the RIMS tube, which I could have prevented in the controller custom setting with less element power. Still cleaned up just fine and the...

    Question regarding pressure fermenters.

I do, 1 minute every time for Sachs yeast. Stone connected to an O2 tank (red) from Lowe's.

    Best hops for a saison

Dredging up and old thread to add a somewhat new thought: what about the new Noble hops? I recently got some Noble Loral in a random pull and wondering how it and other “new” noble hops (Cascade, etc) would do in a Saison.

    Spike CF5 vs Brewbuilt X1 Unti-Tank

After looking at them, and owning a CF-5, I see one, significant difference. I need to roll my conical around, often full. Being able to roll it around and not carry a heavy fermentor is a back-saver. The CF-5 with the stock leg/caster set is so 'tippy' that it was almost unusable. The...

    Questions on pressure fermenting

Yes, I've got a Spike CF-5 and have tested pressure fermentations with about a dozen batches after decades of non-pressurized brewing. For making a clean, non-oxidized IPA, I have found pressurization to be fantastic, or any style where being 'clean' tasting beer is desired (i.e. Cream Ale...
