    2-vessel HERMS or 3 vessels?

I don't want to turn your thread into a RIMS vs HERMS debate, but i'll give you an example as to how the lag time is there vs RIMs. I'm not talking about the temp lag between the HLT and MLT; that's there and usually 1-2degF depending on your components. I'm talking about the difference...

    2-vessel HERMS or 3 vessels?

A little late... but i'll chime in. I originally had a 3 vessel brutus clone /w automated propane (hlt and mlt burners). Worked fine, but was tired of propane hassle (filling, keeping track of tanks, etc). It was very fast at getting items to temp... so when i scoped out an electric setup I...

Could a keg manometer measure carbonation level?

If you want to know the vols of co2 then what Day_trippr suggested is about the only cheap way todo it... buy a spunding valve or the parts to make one. You can pop it on and leave it for 24hrs, come back the next day and note the pressure and temp. You can look this up on a chart and see...

    Dry Hopped Too Soon?

Not as big of a deal to be sitting on hops as some think... a lot of folks here actually dry-hop into their kegs and leave the beer on hops for months while serving. What you experienced may have been 'hop creep'... some people believe that dumping dry hops in can cause a secondary fermentation...

First clean of Chugger Xdry Pump

I may have miss read.. i thought the guy was trying to clean his pump end of brew day by recirculating cleaner that is kept stored in a keg. If it's to clean a keg that's probably not going to be good enough.

First clean of Chugger Xdry Pump

Meant for the reply where the keg was going to be inverted... the gas-out is about 1" tall and would be able to gravity feed to the pump to prime it. if the keg is standing up, i don't know how you'll get the pump primed unless you start it under pressure to get liquid "out".

    Here’s coil

Good to go... unless your coil was pushing hard up against the other wall I wouldn't worry so much here. If you try to yank that out and cut off some you'll have a super hard time getting those fittings "off"; when you tighten compression fittings they actually move/squeeze that steel ...

RIMS Exit Temp Higher than Setpoint

I can think of only two reasons your PID would be showing lower temp than a thermopen at the mash tun where wort is returning... there is no way the wort is actually gaining heat after it exits the tube. Your PID must not be able to grab the temp 1) You may have air pockets... if there is an...

First clean of Chugger Xdry Pump

good thought.. may be easier to connect "gas out" to the "pump in" otherwise it'll be hard to get a flow started.

DIY keg/carboy washer... too foamy, even w Saniclean. Advice?

You may be able to try putting a pvc ball valve in the middle so you can dial down the flow... or lessen the concentration and lengthen the contact time with saniclean. I use saniclean and see some foaming, but not enough to prevent use. I'm using a 1/3hp pump and 3g of solution. I have tried...

First clean of Chugger Xdry Pump

Don't see any replies here... so i'll reply even though it's old. For the pumps I pump cleaner through them after my brew day is finished (water, then pbw mix, then sanitizer mix). Every few months you'll want to pull open that front and take a peak/clean it out. I don't see any reason you...

When and how do you clean your electric element?

If you've got a lot of buildup acid (food grade citric acid is dirt cheap). 151grams per gallon, 30 min at 180degF or 120mins at 140degF. The scale/beerstone will slide right off.

anyone doing protein rest with their RIMS?

I also use my chugger to pump for mash recirc, probably about the speed of those tan pumps at full bore. That faster speed may be why i'm not seeing protein build up. My cartridge eleme is 19mm, so about 3/4" in diameter so it's on the larger side. I also don't do a protein rest, I've never...

    Hybrid Fly Sparge Technique

Thanks.... that clears it up. I've done that several times on accident, don't think my eff was affected either way but didn't actually notate it so i can't review the OG vs expected.

    Hybrid Fly Sparge Technique

I'm a little lost on how this is a hybrid technique... seems to me they're just fly sparging without a manifold, which I didn't think was required. I'm leaving my recirc hose on the top of the grainbed, it layers the HLT water fine like a tequila sunrise. The idea is to just keep 1-2" of water...

anyone doing protein rest with their RIMS?

i stand corrected... that is 19mm in diameter, but 15.5 inches long. The quadzilla is 15 inches long as well and they recommend a 16-18inch enclosure.

anyone doing protein rest with their RIMS?

No joke... that quadzilla is nice; the $130 price tag isn't though. 5500watts at 18" long seems like a bit much. I'm at 2kw and the same length, but i'm only ramping 1-2degF a minute and keeping temps stable. If i wanted to heat strike water or mash water with it i guess it's a good...

WTB Pumps, QDs, Camloks, Electrical Supplies

I recently switched my "kal clone' to all DIN components. It was a 50amp dual element panel... would you be interested in some 50amp contactors, 30amp fuse holders, ac/dc transformers for the dc supplies? PM me .. i've been hanging onto them in case i ever built another panel but that doesn't...

my Saison has stalled at 1.030

Whoops... I guess I should have let it finish off and then harvested. now that I pitched 3711 on top I wouldn't know the percentage of each. Then again, i'm not sure if maybe doing the starter a different way would help... i did a 1500ml starter at 1.040 with light dme. Maybe two stage...

anyone doing protein rest with their RIMS?

I actually patterned my setup after yours... I thought having a normal loopback element would be to hard to clean, and the cartridge ones are great for just wiping down. Turns out that by running the sparge water through the tube it basically cleans it. I still run PBW through as i'm cleaning...
