    Beginner understanding of brew recipes

I'm just getting started as well, but in Hamilton there's Brew Time on Upper James just south of Rymal. I'm letting them brew a batch for me right now, and they have the basic equipment and supplies.

    Software

Beersmith seems to work fine under Linux using Wine (on Debian Testing). This is mildly ironic, but oh well.

    Hello, from northern Alberta

I lived near Hay River NWT in the 70's and we used to get the tail end of Chinooks around this time of year. It could warm up to 0C for you, but of course it won't last long.

Yes, I can get it from the LCBO in 500ml cans. I think I'll get some more, since I just got one to try it. :) This is great information. I was considering buying Beersmith, but I'll wait to see how I do with my brewing. I have a lot to learn, but I of course I have a lot of incentive. I...

Nugent, you are awesome! I will brew it one day, but I'm so new at this I can't say when :) I'm like a kid in a candy store discovering new beers lately. Couldn't it be goosed to a higher ABV with a bit of sugar? Even 4.8% or so would do.

Whats your favorite food with a beer???

I just finished a roast beef sandwich (sirloin tip fresh out of the oven) and had it just with bread, butter, and black pepper with a Tsingtao to wash it down. That's a very nice beer with food. There are so many nice beers I want to make but I'm just a silly noob who hasn't even made his...

    Caledonian 80/-

What kind of beer is this exactly? It could afford to be a bit stronger, since it's only 4.1 ABV. The ingredients are posted on the website, but would it still be hard to reproduce without the full details of the recipe? Here's how they describe it: And here's the ingredients: I...

    A Problem at the LHBS

That sounds awful. Have you tried online suppliers like this one?

    Beer 101

Great idea! I've been there, but it was years ago, and it never occurred to me to sample some beer styles there. There was a Scottish pub in Hess Village that I used to visit as well ... years ago I lived 3 blocks from Hess Village on George Street. That's pretty good beer country for...

    Beer 101

Come across and get some! Where I'm sitting right now (Hamilton) is only an hour's drive or so from Buffalo, but I bet you can find the cans in Niagara Falls. Yeah, I think my first batch of homebrew might be a Newcastle clone. It's a very pleasant beer.

    Beer 101

That's a very useful link, thanks. Now I know that, ie, Bass is an ESB, so that's one of my main priorities to try next time. My tasting experiments have been pretty successful so far, though ... I've already picked Brown Ale as a favorite, and IPA not so much. You can't just read about this...

    Beer 101

I've realized how ignorant I am about beer, and decided that this is a failing that demands a remedy. So I must bite the bullet and drink more beer! Up until now I've been drinking mostly lagers and pilsners, with European ones (mostly German and Dutch) being my favorites. But to be 55...

This is gonna be fun ...

Yes, I just discovered the wiki earlier today. You guys have put together some very nice resources here :) I guess I should round out this info with Charles Papazian's The Complete Joy Of Homebrewing Third Edition? That seems to be one of the main books to read on home brewing.

This is gonna be fun ...

Roughly $100 CD for 6 cases, give or take depending on the ingredients. They will also do any recipe you bring them apart from the 100 or so they have.

This is gonna be fun ...

I've been casually considering homebrewing for a while, but for some reason I really got the bug over the past few days and I've been voraciously reading up on how to get started. This site has been helpful (though of course I don't understand most of what you're talking about yet), and I think...
