You guys told me to buy one..now what?

Search for hydrometer on you tube and watch a video from "craigtube". By far one of the easiest to understand on the not only how to use it, but also what it does and why.

Different readings on hydrometer vs. Refractometer

Did a series of tests today. Calibrated with distilled water as directed. Then took 4 measurements as I increased sugar in the water to see if the discrepancy varied as the SG went up. The first measurement was identical at 1.020. But then after that the refractometer was consistently 4-5 lower...

Different readings on hydrometer vs. Refractometer

I meant user error with the refractometer. Just ran a test with sugar water and still get a difference between the two. I will recalibrate tomorrow with distilled water. I'm sure it must be something with calibration.

Different readings on hydrometer vs. Refractometer

Calibrated with water at exactly 60degrees. Wort sample was also exactly 60 degrees. Sample for refractometer was pulled right from the tube with the hydrometer. Shouldn't have been any temp correction needed since it was calibrated at 60, sample was at 60, and hydrometer says to use at 60...

Different readings on hydrometer vs. Refractometer

Ok, so I just got a refractometer for Christmas and admit that I don't really know what I am doing, but it doesn't seem like rocket science. I made an agave wheat beer tonight. My refractometer read 1.066 but my hydrometer read 1.072. Both readings were from the same sample that I got to a...

    Agave nectar

Just brewed it finally tonight. 1.072 on the hydrometer so I figure probably 3 to 4 weeks before I test again.

    First time reusing washed yeast

Was sort of concerned at what I saw but am pretty confident the ultra thin layer of slightly dark stuff was just settlement. Wasn't sure on how much to pitch but think I am going to just toss it all in. It's less 50 of what was in my fermenter when I legged originally and I know some people...

    First time reusing washed yeast

In the pic you can see the slightly darker stuff as it kind of swirlled.

    First time reusing washed yeast

Not sure if the picture is going to come through, but here is the yeast I washed and saved from a batch of a fairly neutral tasting beer. It was stored for about two months. Its color was the same as the day I saved it and it smelled fine. There was a light layer of darker stuff on top. My...

    Agave nectar

Thanks for the recipe Rob. This one will be one of my last extract brews and I hope to go all grain within a month or so. Defininatly would like to brew that once I change over. The nectar I have is Honey Tree Organic Agave Nectar and is dark amber in color. What did you factor for its SG? I...

    Agave nectar

Crappily enough, I haven't had a chance to brew it yet. I have everything I need including 3+ pounds of agave nectar but just no time. Hoping to get to it this weekend.

    Pipe/tube size

I am in the process of putting together my brewing rig and moving to all grain and all electric at the same time so I can brew in the basement. I have a regular pump a buddy gave me that I plan to use for transfer from HLT to MLT and plan to buy a magnetic pump for transfer from MLT to boil...

    Thermometer and sight glass question

So I'm prepping for my move to AG and since a friend hooked me up with two keggels and an entire brew rig with pump for free I thought I'd spend some money on a few luxury items like getting a couple sight glass and thermometer combos from Bobby's website. My question is: With the thermometer...

    Northern brewer hops question

Made a really simple beer consisting of just Pilsen extract and 1oz of Northern Brewer hops for 60 mins. I am looking to brew it agin but just realized I bought US Northern Brewer hops and I think I used German Northern Brewer last time. These are about 1% less AAU. What, if any, difference...

    whirlfloc tablets

I use a paint strainer bag to dry hop in, but the smaller ones can be used as a slip on filter over your racking cane. I let it sit in starsan along with a small wire tie. Then just slip it over then end of the racking cane, wire tie is in place and +1 to the starting in the middle of the...

    Corny's won't hold pressure

+1 on pressurizing. I have one that is just like you said... Leaks when I am cleaning it. I hit it with 12psi and it's tight as a drum and will stay sealed. Sent from my iPad using HB Talk
