    Cider Question (adding sugar)

You're saying that yeast can survive in a gravity of 1.300? If that even fermented out, you would have an ABV of 38.66%. The specific gravity of straight corn syrup is about 1.420. I'm thinking maybe we're using different units or something. I might just leave this batch alone. With an...

    Cider Question (adding sugar)

I'm doing 5 gallons of cider (using organic apple juice and wine yeast). I mixed the recommended amount of yeast nutrient in with the juice, added the yeast, and aerated. I held off on adding any further sugar to the mix because the juice was already at 1.053, and I didn't want it to take...

wooden bottle tray for grolsch bottles?

Yeah, I make my own wooden crates. I just measured the dimensions of an old Sam Adams cardboard box and went from there. Some times Lowe's will damage out their 1x12 pine boards for 90% off if they have cracks, splits, twists, etc... Good thing I work at Lowe's and the wood always seems...

    Beer with........ pipe tobacco?

(from our old pal Wikipedia) Toxicology The LD50 of nicotine is 50 mg/kg for rats and 3 mg/kg for mice. 40–60 mg can be a lethal dosage for adult human beings. This makes it an extremely deadly poison. It is more toxic than many other alkaloids such as cocaine, which has a lethal dose of...

    I thought this was funny

I was talking to this old-timer at work and he said that when they used to brew beer back in the day they would just put it in these big ceramic crocks and cover it with cheesecloth. Not very airtight or sanitary. He said there was never a problem with infection or anything. You have to stop...

    Learn from my mistake

Oh, I just use my carboy for storage. You know when you buy a steak and it has that little pad thing underneath to absorb the blood? Well, I wring those out and save the juices. It really quenches your thirst on those hot summer days! :cross: Just kidding, I was bored when I made my...

    I thought this was funny

This is krausen in my hydrometer test jar. I left it sit out for a few days after I put it in the carboy. I went to clean it out today and the yeast is happily going to work. I didn't sanitize the hydrometer or the test tube, and the beer was exposed to air for a few days--just goes to show you...

    Learn from my mistake

(from wikipedia) Twenty-three consumers died in 1986 because a fraudulent winemaker in Italy blended toxic methanol (wood alcohol) into his low-alcohol wine to increase its alcohol content. In 1985, diethylene glycol (an anti-freeze) appeared to have been added as an adulterant by some...

I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this...

Ok, I severely under-primed my last brew. It has been bottle conditioning for, oh... 5 weeks, and still hardly any carbonation. That aside, it tastes good. But I'm not a big fan of flat beer. My question: Is it ok to uncap all of the bottles and dump them in the corny and force carb them? Or...

    Learn from my mistake

haha, well played, sir. Well played. I usually throw it in the garage trash, but after 2 days it reeks like vomit. Maybe I'll just double bag... or throw it in the neighbor's pool. :cross: just kidding

    Learn from my mistake

Don't dump 10lbs of grain down your garbage disposal at once. At first I was just tipping my MLT over the sink and slowly pouring it in, and then PLOP the whole chunk of grain just fell in. At that point I thought "meh, it can handle it." What followed was a loud humming noise when the motor...

    Air compressor regulator?

Would it be possible to use an air compressor regulator for kegging? The ones they sell at Lowe's are ~$30. The ones they sell on line are ~$60. However, I'd rather pay double for something that is not going to kill me or make my beer taste like ass. What do you guys think?
