Better Bottle Big Blow PET Closure

I've had a couple of clogs recently using the orange carboy cap on my better bottle and whatever size tubing fits on the spout. Recently purchased the Big Blow PET closure to hopefully avoid this in the future. Wasn't sure what size tubing would fit into the opening, so I took a trip to...

I practically boiled my fermenting beer

UPDATE. Transfered to Secondary tonight. Why? Beer was terribly cloudy with a lot of swirling trub. Probably not necessary but doing it anyway. OG was 1.046 and we're now down to 1.007. Aroma is sweet, almost lemony. Taste is very clean. Not picking up anything that would make me think...

Any first time hop growers in Northeast?

Hey all. Trying my hand at hop growing this year, and I'll admit I'm getting impatient. Planted one Cascade and one Kent Goldings rhizome about two weeks ago. Cleared out a nice, sunny, southern-facing area against my house. Buried them horizontally, with (what I assume was) the sprouts...

I practically boiled my fermenting beer

Will let everyone know how it turns out. Down to 80 degrees today and slowly dropping. The weird thing was when I noticed the temp was in the triple digits, the airlock was still going strong. I figured I would have toasted all the yeast at that temp. To be continued....

I practically boiled my fermenting beer

You guys are a trip. Love how quickly you jump on these threads and the variety of the answers the OP gets. We're already looking at "this will give you massive headaches" to "I do this on purpose". Good times. I suppose since I've already made the major (time) investment, we'll keg it after...

I practically boiled my fermenting beer

Just did my 27th batch on Friday. I've made the usual noob mistakes over that time but I think I may have screwed the pooch on this one. Tried NB's Partersbier. Think I was more into the back story than what it might taste like. Full deets here...

What would you brew if you were me?

Great suggestions everyone. Thanks! I have made Biermuncher's Centennial Blonde. Liked it. Didn't love it. Had thought about some SMaSH beers but it sounds like an all Citra may not be the best idea. BeerGolf - can you send me your IPA recipe. Like the idea of using all three. Just...

What would you brew if you were me?

Got a little aggressive with some hop preorders and now I'm sitting on a pound of Centennial, and 3/4 pound each of Amarillo and Citra. Looking for some recipe suggestions featuring some or all of these. Thanks!

    Hop threshold for clogging

Would a false bottom solve the clogging problem? Don't know much about them when used in a boil kettle. If so, is it worth spending the money on the blichmann fb (~$75), or is there a better/more affordable version? Seems like a lot to spend vs. building a hop spider. Wondering how...

    Hop threshold for clogging

Thanks. Forgot to add a few details. I'm using pellets. Hear those are more likely to clog than whole leafs. And my boilermaker has a dip tube. So I'm pulling from (close to) the bottom. Can you get a bazooka screen for a dip tube?

    Hop threshold for clogging

Hey all. Anyone have a general rule of thumb re: how much hops will clog your spigot? I've got a 10 gallon Boilermaker, and I've also built hop sock. I typically don't use it (assuming I get better utilization) unless I've got a recipe that seems like it uses a lot of hops. Did an IPA last...

DIY BIAB false bottom - rust?

That looks really familiar. Picked up this inexpensive cake cooling rack for my 10 gallon Boilermaker - billed as stainless steel. Snipped out a section (on the left) for the dip tube. Worked great for a while but then noticed the rust. Can't use that in my wort anymore. Looking for a REAL...

Do i need a false bottom in biab pot

Be careful. I purchased and used this exact same thing. Rusted after only a few sessions. Don't want that in my wort anymore. http://www.amazon.com/Excellante-Nickel-Plated-Cooling-Steamer/dp/B001PZD63M/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1349713160&sr=8-4&keywords=steamer+rack Looking for a good...

    Autumn Maple Clone??

Has anyone else tried this? Mine has only been in the keg about a week and a half (still young), but I'm not digging it at all. Never tried the real stuff so I have nothing to compare it to. But it has this intense vegetal taste that's really overpowering. I'm not sure if it's the yams or if...

How big a pot for BIAB 5gal?

That's exactly what I did. Removed and plugged the Brewmometer. Then drilled a hole in the lid for a digital temp probe. No longer in the way of my bag. See post #20 here FWIW I found my absolute max in a 10 gal Boilermaker is @ 17 pounds of grain and 8.5 gal of water.

    BIAB Mash Temp Measurement

Ended up ordering a long stem thermometer and drilled a hole in the top of my Boilermaker. Probe extends to about the same spot where the Brewmometer was, but is out of your way when you remove the top to stir. Working well for me so far.

Moisture in my keezer after installing eva-dry 500

I've had this EvaDry thing for 3-4 months now. My keezer is well-sealed and I'm still getting significant condensation. Temp is set at 40. The balls (?) in the window have remained blue. I'm not sure this thing is even working.
